| dlstewart's Full Review: FELLOWES Gel Mousepad with WristRest FEL 91741 |
I use two of the Fellowes Gel Mouse Pads with Wrist Rest -- one at work and one at home. The mouse pad at work is used with a two-button corded mouse. The mouse pad at home is used with a 4-button cordless optical mouse.
Description of the Mouse Pad & Wrist Rest
The entire unit measures 1 1/8-inches high x 6 1/4-inches wide x 10 1/4-inches deep. The mouse pad and wrist rest sit in separate compartments with a hard plastic base and edges holding the two pieces in place. The base of the unit has four 1/2-inch circular nonskid rubber feet at the four corners. The useable area of the mouse pad measures 6 1/4-inches deep by 6-inches wide. The mouse pad is made from a durable, flexible foam material with a Lycra fabric surface. The wrist rest measures 3-inches deep by 5 3/4-inches wide. The wrist rest has a hard plastic back and a soft Lycra fabric top and sides with a gel substance inside. It feels firm to the touch, soft but with support that gives slightly beneath the weight of ones hand. Both the mouse pad and wrist rest sections can be removed from the hard plastic tray where they sit. This is excellent for cleaning any lint or debris from the fabric edges and base.
Using the Mouse Pad
The mouse tracks smoothly on the mouse pad surface. No skips, bumps or non-movement. The cursor glides across the computer screen.
At Home with a Cordless Mouse
I use a Logitech 4-button Cordless Optical Mouse, which is slightly larger than a standard mouse. The mouse pad sits to the right of my keyboard in an area of limited space. The size of the mouse pad is perfect for my computer setup. When family members use my computer, I hear mutters about how small the mouse pad is compared to the ones they use. One famous comment: When are you going to get a real mouse pad!. I have no problems with this mouse pad; it works well for me.
At Work Using a Standard-size Mouse with Cord
Ive used two mice with this mouse pad, both standard-size 2-button mice (Microsoft and a Micro Innovations). These mice have worked very well on the pad. However, a family member received the Fellowes Gel Mouse Pads with Wrist Rest as a gift from a friend and used a standard 2-button mouse with it and hated the size of the mouse pad. It didnt last a week at the computer. I think its being used as a plant mat somewhere. Just goes to demonstrate that not everyone likes the same product!
Fabulous Wrist Rest
This wrist rest is ergonomic. My wrist fits naturally on it. The gel cushion is firm yet soft and just resilient enough for comfortable support. The Lycra fabric is cool to the touch with a smooth surface. The wrist rest is a perfect width for me, too. I can use a mouse at the computer for hours without feeling discomfort.
Wear & Tear
Ive been using the Fellowes Gel Mouse Pads with Wrist Rest for over two years at home and work. The Lycra fabric wears incredibly well. No frays anywhere! Both units look almost new despite daily use. The hard plastic base of the unit at work has warped slightly so that
it doesnt sit flat against the desk, but the mouse pad and wrist rest still work great. The unit at home looks perfect.
Summary
Would I purchase another one? Yes. For my purposes, the compact size of the unit is ideal. Ive adjusted to the smaller mouse pad area so that I hardly notice it. The wrist rest is very comfortable. However, I can see where the size of this mouse pad would irritate people not used to it. Before purchasing one, try it at your local store with a display mouse to make sure this is the mouse pad for you. I purchased mine at a local office supply store for about $12.00.
I hope you have found this review useful.
