| zanahoria9000's Full Review: Enchantment Resort |
My wife and I decided we needed to take some time away from our jobs & kids so we booked ourselves a couple days at Mii Amo in Sedona, AZ. We didn't know really what to expect, because the only information we had to go by was what we found on the internet, and a newspaper article we read.
Anyways, here are the pros and cons:
POSITIVES...
o SETTING: Absolutely spellbinding! The scenery is just breathtaking. The buildings of the resort are nestled in a canyon which has immediate access to hiking and mountain bike trails. The magic of the Sedona area is all around you.
o ARCHITECTURE: The spa is beautiful in its simplicity of design. It's so serene to just hang around inside the main building, and the treatment rooms are all comfortable and well-lit by natural or ambient lighting or candles. The casitas that are on-site are very comfortable and have their own fireplaces built-in to the bedroom area.
o STAFF: In general the staff were all very helpful and professional and polite. The spa staff were all excellent.
o FOOD: The food prepared in the restaurant is very healthy and delicious. The chef seems to focus on freshness of ingredients, and taking a very muted "fusion" approach to cooking. We only had one disappointing dish during our 3-day stay.
o SPA: The variety and uniqueness of the spa programs really put the "treat" in treatments! Sedona mud wrap? Milk and honey bath? East Indian dosha wrap with customized essential oil massage? You got it. They have a great variety of things to try, and my wife and I only had one disappointing spa treatment each (more on that later.)
NEGATIVES:
o COST: Boy, it's expensive. You can stay at the near-by Enchantment resort and still walk over to Mii Amo to use the facilities on a pay-per-use basis, and I'm thinking that if we ever go back, we'll do things that way. I believe that it is somewhat cheaper to stay at Enchantment than at Mii Amo, and Enchantment is really beautiful in its own right. We chose to do a package deal (meals, accomodation and spa included) and it was very pricey, but we decided to treat ourselves anyway. Next time, we'll do it a little cheaper.
o SPA TREATMENTS COMPLAINT #1: Ok, here's the nitpicky details about the spa stuff. My wife's complaint was about her "stress consultation" with a Mii Amo lifestyle consultant. My wife was looking forward to learning practical ways in which to re-connect with herself when life just gets too frenetic. Instead, the consultant basically read my wife's "cards" and told her that if she gets stressed she should "go into her heart space" and have a glass of wine to relax. Hmm. I guess my wife will be able to go into her heart space and pour that glass of wine with her free hand while she holds our 13-month old daughter and talks business on the phone with her boss in Miami.
o SPA TREATMENTS COMPLAINT #2: I ordered a Vichy-style shower and massage. A previous reviewer on this site had mentioned that it was amazing. So I booked it. I was led into a treatment room and then was laid down on a large porcelain-type drain table. The arm of the multi-nozzled shower swung overhead as the attendant worked the temperature and flow of the spray. It was enjoyable for about 5-10 minutes, then it became excruciating! Why? Well, I'm a 6 foot tall male, and this table was NOT designed for a man. My body was rigid and tense in trying to adjust to lying in an uncomfortable position. After 30 minutes I begged the attendant to stop, so we finished up with just a basic massage. She said she had never had a tall male on that table before and she was very sympathetic and apologetic about my plight. In summary, this shower treatment is only for people 5'10" or shorter!
o ATTENTION TO DETAIL: Well, I just figure that if you're going to shell out tons of dough to stay at a place like Mii Amo, the staff should be giving their best efforts to make the place look and run as best as possible. I noticed during our stay that different change-room soap/toiletry dispensers were not refilled and left to run dry. Shower curtains were torn or missing in the change room. Lights were burned out in the pool. Small things, but a little disappointing.
