...to disable the on-board graphics card in the device manager under control panel, and then enable the new, add-on graphics card through plug and play? I have to think that the graphics card manufacturers have run into this sort of issue before.
I have had good success with the HP support forums at http://forum.support.hp.com. You might have to wait a few days for a reply, but it gets emailed to you. This helped immeasurably when we were having problems with our modem, and connecting to the internet. Might save you some money.

Most of the major PC manufacturers (Dell, Compaq, HP, etc.) offer models with and without sound and/or video integrated into the motherboard. If you think you will ever want to upgrade your PC, get one without onboard sound/video. It will cost more initially, but probably pay off in the long run.
