Don't Dismiss The Pinch

Feb 28 '01 (Updated Mar 02 '01)

The Bottom Line Hand/wrist motion is required for life. Brushing your teeth to driving your car. Take care of the small body parts. They may seem minute but they are part of YOU.

Since the beginning of time people have suffered, one way or another, from work related injuries. Be it Soldiers, Truck Drivers, Athletes to Carpenters. Most all of these are blue collar fields and injuries are more common place and also more socially acceptable.

But what about desk jobs? What could you get, paper cut? Bacteria Cream and Band-Aid and go back to work, right? I am not going to even bring up 'Big Rump' syndrome, but Cysts and Carpal Tunnel. Both of which are serious.

I began typing years ago on those dinosaur type writers that you could only type one fingered. Mainly because all the keys would jam on the paper if typing to fast, or the keys were so stiff you had to hammer it to get the ink on the paper. All the time thinking nothing of it.

Now days, I am typing all the time. Be it 'Just to say HI' or the latest Novel Draft. And never once did I take into consideration my hands. Those were for holding a crying baby, wiping a tear or holding my beloved's hand as we walked side by side.

Because I did not take them serious I have surgery in two days. I can not type that 'HI Mom' letter with out cringing in pain. I can not wipe that tear with out holding back a holler. I can not hold my husband's hand as we walk around.

I have tried the Natural Keyboard's, thinking modern science would come up with something to help. NO luck there. I have purchased the 'Gel Filled' wrist rests, still nothing. I sleep with wraps and bandages on my hands and wrists every night in hopes the next morning they would be OK to get some much needed work done. All are unsuccessful.

I wish I could say 'try this' it is guaranteed to work. But I can't. All I can say is pay attention to your body. Listen to the aches and cramps in your hands. Rapid swelling is not 'water gain'. But possible pinched veins and pressure caused by a growth.

I am no doctor, but I do have common sense, now that it is a painful reminder.

I have several cysts growing not just my wrists, but inside my hands and in the bones. There are more bones and nerves in your hands then any other part of your body. And in such a compact area. This is more serious than just a bump or niche.

I have found that cooling packets help, or just use Ice and a Towel. It tends to keep the swelling at bay and pain not so bad it limits your every motion.
