I don't want to disqualify myself immediately, but I recently worked for Ericsson. That said, I submit this as an honest opinion of two upcoming phones.
Ericsson has lagged behind a bit recently -- especially in the U.S. However, great new things are coming. Two solid phones -- the T18d (for TDMA in the U.S.) and the T18z (GSM, also for the U.S.) are very solid phones. They have vibrating call alert, big phone books, best in class battery life, and the T18z has voice dialing.
The phones will also have cool accessories, like a little keyboard called the Chatboard, which lets youtype in messages like on a two-way pager, rather than by hitting numbers several times per letter. With the T18d, I can send email to the phone (via AT&T). The T18z lets me send short messages.
To be truthful,as I mentioned, I recently worked for Ericsson. I had the opportunity to use both phones. Upon leaving, I am happy to say, I will continue to use them. They have the size, utility and style I want. Also, since ericsson has lower market share in the U.S. than Nokia or Motorola, they tend to stand out.
More good things will be coming, but these are pretty solid phones all around. The biggest problem will be getting one, as distribution is slow and Ericsson has a bit of a hard time getting volumes out. Further, the z is available in Canada in small numbers, but we will have to wait until around June for the U.S. Lastly, Ericsson does have some funny quirks (like a "no" button that also serves as the "on" button). That said, the phones will be worth the wait and the extra searching.
