| maciek's Full Review: Nokia 5110 |
I bought my first cell phone in June 1999. It was June 12 exactly, my 20th birthday. I was happy I finally got it. Now I too could get 'mobile'. Whatever it means.
Actually it happens that as long as you don't posses a cell phone, you don't even feel the need of using it. Whenever you need to make a phone call you just use the public pay phones and your telecard. It is after all convenient, isn't it? Public phones are virtually everywhere, so why would you decide to carry yet another gizmo on you? And one that is said to emit harmful radiation. For my part: I just wanted to keep in touch any time anywhere.
Anyways, my first cell was the impeccable Nokia 5110. It is a member of the 51XX family. The latter 10 is the description of a model built to work with the European GSM 900 service. If you come across one called 5130 it means it's suitable for the GSM 1800 service. That's all as far as the name is concerned.
The phone introduced the world to Nokia's marvellous invention - the NaviKey. To me it's as brilliant as it is easy to use. The one button (the NaviKey) acts as the command button. Using it you receive an incoming call and also hang up. You chose the menu items and execute the commands. All else you need is a cancel key and a pair of arrows for navigating through the menu.
And the menu is state-of-the-art. No other phone manufacturer gives its phones menu as clear, easy and useful as Nokia. All the commands are listed in a logical manner. You go from one item to the other using the arrows and then press the NaviKey, et voila - you're there. To be more specific: you don't have to browse through three phone books (Siemens c35i) to enter a phone number or find one.
The display is crisp, clear and capacious. And even though my 5110 had a display far smaller than the newest 71XX, still it contained all the important information and was easily legible and not at all overloaded with numbers or letters.
And in the phone options and functions designers found a place for games, including my favorite Snake. I love this game! My to score exceeded 1100 points. Try and beat it.
The design started by this phone is more or less incorporated into the newer models. It's sleek, perfectly fitted to your hand and head, and comes in just the right size. And there was another novelty introduced with this phone. Once you came to believing the factory grey cover was dull you could purchase additional covers in a great number of colors and designs. There even are custom made and hand painted covers for this phone. So you can make it as individual as you yourself are.
Has it ever happened to you that the battery in your hone went dead in the middle of your call? How long does it last on average? In the Nokia 5110 the battery is a masterpiece. Not too heavy, rather small and very powerful. When I used the phone a lot it easily lasted 5 full days. When left alone and used sporadically the phone could work over a week. And to fully charge it you needed only a few hours.
This Nokia phone is very good at finding your operator's network and remaining in range. It has an external antenna which is probably the key reason for that. Contrary to the newer and antenna-less Nokia 3210 it works very well even in my cabin. The sound produced by this phone's speaker is good, loud and clear. No problem understanding the other party.
For all the gizmo-lovers: this is an older phone. It has nothing like WAP or sending cartoons (71xx; 3210). It's a plain phone which perfectly performs its core task - connecting people. And I loved it. Until I lost it... A great loss indeed.
