Phillips VRB664AT VCR

Dec 20 '00

I have not bought a vcr since 1994. While my Hitachi and Mitsubishi vcrs still work well I decided that I wanted something that had the 19 micron heads for better recording in SLP mode (6hr)I shopped and bought a Phillips VRB664AT. The first thing I noticed was how light this vcr is. Somewhere around 5-6 pounds(hmmm...does that mean they left something out??)
I plugged the vcr in and turned it on. While I was thumbing through the owners manual the clock properly set itself.(Nice feature)Also this clock has a big 1 inch high green display. Very easy to read but also a little to bright for my taste and does not have a manual or auto dimmer. Setting up the vcr is very simple with good menu controls. Went to change channels, Ops!! where did the channel display go. Well folks this VCR does not have a onboard channel display. Some people may not mind, but for myself I find it an essential part of a vcr. The sound and picture are very good. This model is advertised as having a commercial skip\advance. There seems to be some confusion in this area. RCA holds the patent for commercial advance. Commercial advance rewinds the tape and then goes through and marks the beginning and end of all commercials on any tape that was recorded in their machine. When played the commercial skip is automatic. No user intervention is needed. The commercial skip (sometimes also called commercial pass)on this vcr is a button on the remote control that fast forwards the tape for 30 seconds at a time. Same thing I've been doing with fast forward for years. The one touch record button is a nice feature but you have to have the tv on and go to channel 3 or 4 to see the hours and channel. What a pain. Looks like more diamond dust. No wonder this vcr is so light. I found it at Circuit City for $99.00. The price is right but not the features, I would pass on this vcr. There are plenty of vcrs out there from $90.00 to $120.00 that have better features with good to excellent picture and sound
