I have been an owner of a DISH network system since day one {maybe 3 or 4 years ago, I think}. Many of my friends had the DSS systems but at the time, to get the channels that I wanted my DSS package would have cost about $40.00 per month. DISH network service for the channels that I wanted was only going to be $20.00 per month so I went with it.
Currently, DSS has been hacked so if I had one of those systems my monthly service would be $0.00 per month and I would get all of the channels. With this is mind, I am going to list the advantages/disadvantages of each service assuming that you had no bill for DSS because you hacked your "H" but pay for DISH America's top 40.
1. Monthly service price - Advantage DSS for all channels with a hacked "H" card. Echostar can be hacked but it is more of a hassle than it's worth.
2. Channel selection - Advantage DISH better programming if you have kids, for sports DSS may have a slight edge for pro but DISH has an edge for college.
3. Local channels - Advantage DISH you can now get most major cities including my locals (Indianapolis)
4. Picture quality - Advantage DISH the DSS system suffers considerably from pixilation, this problem will get worse as DSS adds more local programming to the same satellite. This problem can best be described as when the picture looks like heat comming off of the road in the summer time. You cant hardly watch a basketball game on DSS because the pixilation is such an annoyance
5. Rain fade - Advantage DISH this is a problem when it is raining/snowing hard between you and the satellite, it causes you to lose the signal. My friends with DSS complain about this all of the time, it has happened to me once.
6. Reliable service - Advantage DISH the DSS system is so busy trying to knock down the hacked "H" cards all the time, legitimate customers get "hit" also
7. Other service - Advantage DISH with two way internet service at blazing speed
