| drewluv's Full Review: Hitachi 60" Projection Television 60EX39B |
About 18 mnths ago, it was time to upgrade my stereo system, so my wife and I went out to the local electronics store to shop for a fairly priced component set-up. I had always heard about DVD but didn't know much. $3,700 dollars later, We came home with a totally beefed up Pioneer system with DVD, Cerwin Vega's (front channel) Infinity (centre & surround)and a 12inch Profile Subwoofer. All of this would compliment my 27" RCA television. Well you can probably guess that the next step was obvious.
A few months later, we price shopped for a 32" JVC or Sony TV but the prices were so high up that for a few more bucks, we could grab the affordable Hitachi 60" we were eyeing but never thought to buy. Once the delivery guys slid it into the custom made cabinet I designed and built into the wall, I couldn't believe the picture quality this baby put out.
I subscribed to digital cable in our area and 'Daphne' from Frasier never looked so good!
Now enter the DVD. What an amazing experience. The colors are rich, vivid and bright. A friend cautioned me that viewers from an angle will not be able to see the same quality as persons directly in front. I proved him wrong as he sat on my second couch against the other wall. Keep in mind there are limits as to how far to the side you can go, but today's big screens have improved.
So what don't I like about it you ask? I find that when my daughter watches cartoons, the reds come through slightly distorted. Maybe it's the digital cable, I'm not sure yet. (I may investigate if she starts to notice and complains but she's 6 yrs old) Mind you, this only happens when the background is steady or the cartoon character is red and is steady. I also have noticed 1 or 2 movies recorded with dark scenes, they tend to appear really dark and hard to make out. But after adjusting the levels, it improves considerably.
The sound is perfect (I don't use it all that much since all sound sources go through my stereo.) and the bass response is pretty cool. The remote pad lights up but not all of the buttons. The picture in picture is cool and easy to use and set-up. All-in-all, I guess I did pretty good. My model is not from the Ultravision series, but the average person would never know the difference. I definitely recommend it to anyone wanting movies viewed in theatre like size. I figured if these guys can make awesome high-end theatre TV's then I'd give their entry-level a try and I'm absolutely glad I did. If the quality is this great at the low-end, I will definitely look at shopping the high-end in the not too distant future.
