Phillips CD recorder software problems

Dec 13 '99 (Updated Jan 28 '00)

The Phillips CD recorders are kinda hard to use. That's what I experienced when i worked at the Sears electronics department last month. Often times customers had difficulty in operating them so they returned them. Logically, since the player has two drives, you could put the original in one deck, the blank in the other, and press copy. This is not the case. You need to set the volume control, the stereo, and many other settings that don't seem worth while. And if you do this correctly you may often see the word "no audio," What? What do you think I am a rocket scientist?

A few days later the floor model disappeared off the shelf. According to an "official" report the Phillips had recalled them because there was a software encoding problem within the machine. Chances are though that most users will never encounter the problem, but well they recalled them anyway.

My guess is that they will fix the problem by Mid-December, but if you should decide to purchase a Phillips model you should ask when the store got its shipment in. If the date is past December 15, 1999 you should be fine, if it is before November 15, 1999 you may want to ask for a machine with a later production date or you can wait, anywhere between those two date is a gamble. Also, the sales person will most likely not know about the software problem, but hey you're spending $500 so why not be on the safe side.
