| DS-9's Full Review: RIM Blackberry Two Way Pager |
I got yelled at last week for paying more attention to my Blackberry than my girlfriend! I wrote a memo to myself using the little thumb-activated keyboard (I am up to about 30 words per minute now, no nintendo-thumb either) TASK - Get rid of jealous girlfriend (I set a reminder to go off in two months on a Sunday Afternoon in October).
Well, last week my girlfriend got pulled over for having expired plates. She left the new sticker on her desk in the office with her insurance card and registration. Fortunately I was able to pass the appropriate information on the the nice police officer by reading it off of a "Note" stored in the Blackberry. The officer let her go and warned her to keep her registration in the car AND PUT THE NEW STICKER ON. I quickly and secretly emailed her a reminder which she received the next warning when arriving at work.
I get about 120 emails a day. About half of them are junk, but the other half real and usually urgent. I try to make a point NOT to plug in my laptop at home. I feel like work should be done at work and time spent at home should be "personal" time. Blackberry has allowed my to stay on top of my email, responding to important messages immediately, and defering unimportant ones until the morning. In addition I am much more available to my business contacts during the day at the office. We have 23 different phone extensions in the office, so trying to find me if I am not at my desk is very difficult. If a client, contact, or family member calls to reach me at the office they "expect" to get my voicemail. If they email me - they get me immediately!
I do not recommend using the redirector software and a POP server. I would suggest paying for a service like Mi8.com (in fact - they will sell you the blackberry too) because RIMM customer service and support just plain sucks if you are using a POP rather than Exchange server. In fact, they don't even really support it. I spend a total of 60.00 a month which includes my email, messaging service, and mailbox. I dropped my earthlink account (20 bucks) and do not pay RIM anymore (45.00).
I use the blackberry to transcribe meeting notes rather than bringing in a pen and paper (these later get entered into my PC when I use the included software to synch email, contacts, memos, tasks, and Calender functions with OUTLOOK 2000.
The small compact pager-device is so much better than the Palm alternative. I can receive, read, respond, and send an email - with one hand (while driving) faster than it takes to get the pen out and push enough buttons to get a Palm 7 onto the network.
Blackberry will make you more productive!
Blackberry will give you more time to spend with your family!
