i paid $99 for my genica (another name for mptrip) at computergeeks.com.
it does eat AA batteries fairly quickly - nimh will burn out in just five hours or so, and alkalines in maybe seven or eight. otherwise, this
thing is a dream.
the genica does indeed play both plain old CDs and CDs full of MP3 files.
both CD-R and CD-RW worked fine. for the price of a $1 CD-RW, i have 12 hours of recording time. i can re-record a CD-RW 1,000 times without any loss in quality. this is definitely worth $99.
it will recharge your nimh when you leave it plugged into the wall, but be warned - if you turn the unit on while it is charging, it will proceed to discharge the batteries. i wasn't aware of this until it happened to me.
it never seems to skip, except for a few times when i have carried it in a shoulder bag and walked briskly.
it dropped three feet onto a wooden floor. no problem; still works fine.
i would guess that most consumers who try CD-RW and MP3 will not want to go back. this combination is really convenient and inexpensive.
i'm not a pirate - i don't profit from mass replication of other people's work. but i enjoy the freedom of burning copies of music for friends and family. this is how i have come to know all the music that i love; radio and tv don't offer anything i like. i get to hear a lot of music without paying for it, but i eventually go out and buy the music i like, so i feel no guilt about copying among friends.
CD-RW and MP3 support me in my efforts to try out new music before making a purchase, and to share music i like with my friends. other technologies (e.g. sony's not-quite-MP3 walkman) do not. this factor went a long way towards my decision to purchase the genica.
