JVC RX-815V..Do you hear what I hear?

Feb 08 '00

Of all the things I have in my home, I would have to say the one that is most versatile is my stereo/receiver/surround-system. Whether I'm in the mood to watch television or a video, listen to the radio, a tape or a cd or just watch our latest home-made video (featuring yours truly in my self-help video{?} "How to fall off the ladder while cleaning the rain gutters and narrowly avoid breaking your neck, in one STUPID step", the JVC RX-815V fits the bill.

For anyone that has an urge to get totally wired, this system will more than sufficiently help you achieve the ultimate home entertainment system.

SOME OF THE SPECIFICATIONS

Connections for 4 front/2 rear/1 center speaker as well as for a separate sub-woofer. Speaker impedance (for the techno-savvy that really like to fine-tune their listening experience) is 8-16 ohms per speaker at 400 watts per channel.

Connections in the rear for CD/Phono/2 Cassette Decks/2 VCR's (or DVD if you prefer)/Monitor out as well as two 110v-120v outlets (these are handy for plugging in a couple of your components when their cords won't reach a standard outlet or a surge suppressor/power-strip).

As well as the two VCR (or DVD) connections in the rear, there is also a Video IN and Left/Right Audio IN ports in the front. This is great for a quick hook-up of your video camera without messing with all the wires in the back.

The system has a Dolby Pro-Logic Processor with Pro Logic (supporting up to the total of 7 speakers & sub-woofer)/Dolby 3-Channel (2 rear and the center speakers)/Club, Hall, Pavilion or Stadium Effect modes (when in these last 4, they disable the center speaker). Super Bowl Sunday takes on a whole new meaning with full surround-sound speakers and the processor set for stadium. It's the next best thing to actually being there.

SOME OF THE CONTROLS

Along with choosing which speaker format you prefer to listen in, you can also adjust the echo effect. This is a VERY handy feature. For example, if you have your entertainment system set up in a large room (say distance between front and rear speakers is greater than 25 ft), this is a way for you to control when the sounds come from the rear speakers. It can be a bit disorienting to hear something out of the front speakers and then hear it repeated 1/2 a second later from the rear ones. With this feature, you can prevent that, thus enhancing your listening environment.

There is a 10-band graphic equalizer, visible on the decent sized (2 inch x 3 1/2 inch) LED display. Using the memory feature, you can set the equalizer where you want it for various components. For example, you may want to adjust it so that you hear more bass when listening to the radio, CD, tape or record (anyone still remember what those are??) but wish to level it out more for videos, tv or DVDs. This is great, in that it eliminates the necessity to fiddle with the settings each time you switch from one component to another.

Along with setting your equalizer preferences, you can store up to 40 preset radio stations, give them up to a 5-character name or identification and even preset where you prefer the volume to be whenever you switch to a certain component.

The volume control is a large turn-dial on the front of the system which is motor driven when using the remote. The increments on it go up to 30, but I have to be honest, I have only had it as high as about 12 myself. Any higher than that, I'm gonna be getting calls from Yugoslavia telling me to turn down my stereo. What can I say? Some people just don't have an appreciation for Yanni.

If you want to enjoy something without disturbing anyone else in the house, there is also a headphone jack in the front of the system. However, if you're like me, you're going to need a pair of headphones with a VERY long cord on them to be able to sit back and enjoy without camping out right in front of it.

So, if you are looking for that certain component to turn a pretty nice entertainment system into the surround-sound, home-theatre, would-be-nightclub entertainment system that will be the envy of every teenager in your neighborhood (and possibly the cause of frequent visits from your local authorities) then I highly recommend this system to you.

Just one last piece of advice, the next time your neighbors call the police to report you for not turning down your stereo.....when the police arrive, treat them nicely and just as they are about to leave, let them know how your neighbor has been looking for a way to donate to the Policeman's Ball. After all, why should you be the only one to get the opportunity to know most of the officers in your area on a first-name basis?

***Disclaimer*** That last paragraph was meant as a vague attempt at a humorous anecdote, hopefully you will take it as such. However, if not, that's okay too.
