| gwsmith's Full Review: Compaq ProLiant ML370 |
I have been in the computer industry for 12 years now, and have been deploying servers for customers for over 7. I have experience in the recommendation, installation, and support of servers, and have found that Compaq is the only way to go. The ML370 is the latest in a long line of extremely reliable servers from Compaq. It is based on the very popular Proliant 1600, and has a range of processor speeds available.
I believe that there are areas to consider when looking to purchase servers.
1: Reliability - 9/10 If it isn't up an running, who cares how fast or pretty it is? I have deployed over 100 Compaq servers, and there is a lower than 5 percent failure rate within the first 2 years of operation. Plainly put, these boxes, once up and running and configured, stay up.
2: Performance - 10/10 For an Intel based product, you can't ask for a faster server in my opinion. Not only do they offer the newest processors, multiple processor options, and fasted available bus speeds, but the SCSI chain is very quick too.
3: Fault Tolerance - Face it, some day all servers will experience hardware failures. Compaq offers the standards (Raid, hot-swap hard drives, etc), but they also have hot - swap redundant power supplies, teaming fail-over nic options, redundant fans, etc.
4: Ease of service / support - I have had great success with long-term support of these boxes. Compaq Tech Support is quick, and the are knowledgable on their products as well. Just recently, i visited a customer that I had installed their server 5 years ago (proliant 1500, p166 with 128mb ram) and it has been up for over 380 days without interruption.
5: Compatibility / Management - Compaq is compatible with just about everything, and they give you management software (Insight Manager) for free with the servers. We have used this package to manage customer servers over the web, and be notified of a failure prior to the customers knowledge.
I won't ramble on anymore and bore you. Suffice it to say that Compaq knows this business, and makes the best product available in this segment.
