The Best Atari 2600 games
I have played and own over 100 different Atari games, and these are my favorites that I keep with the system at all times..
Yar's Revenge- (Atari)
It feels so good to beat that evil mothership-alien thing. I love this game because the graphics are so abstract. The sound effects are downright sinister. It's a sci-fi version of Breakout with an alien that shoots back at you. There is a 'fuzz zone' where you are invincible but can't shoot at the bad guy. It is a challenging and fun game!
Stampede- (Activision)
This game is highly addictive. The object here is to rope the cattle as you approach them on your horse. You can only miss a 3. You come up behind them and swing that lasso! Keep swingin' and ropin' and the action gets faster and faster, and there get to be so many cattle on the screen that it gets loco. Different colored cows have different point values so pick your targets carefully.
Montezuma's Revenge- (Parker Brothers)
This little-known game is a hidden secret in the Atari world. It is a side scroll adventure. What makes this game exceptional is the gameplay, which is responsive and fun. You control a little Mexican guy who is compelled to jump over bouncing day-of-the-dead skulls and Aztec ghosts. You have to navigate moving platforms, swings and ladders, booby traps, and colorful but dangerous settings. There are multiple rooms to explore, and keys needed to enter other areas. And the gameplay is all about action: jump over and across stuff, climb, etc. It is a cross between Adventure and Donkey Kong, but the graphics and gameplay are much better.
River Raid- (Activision)
" Kill Kill Kill!!" I shout at the screen when my girlfriend plays this one (she's the champ). Guide your plane through precarious canyons and waterways, killing everything in your path and dodging missiles. Watch out for the little guys that fly perpendicular across the screen.
Defender- (Atari)
Even though the graphics are blinking because the memory on Atari system is so tiny, this game is totally fun. Blast away at fast little space urchins and evil satellites. You have to be quick to win (and know how to use the smart bombs).
Pitfall- (Activision)
You are an Indiana-Jones-like dude who is running and jumping and swinging all over the place! Watch out for snakes, and be careful hopping on the gators. This was one of the first side-scrollers with awesome graphics for the Atari.
Demon Attack- (Imagic)
This is another game in the Space Invaders/Galaga mode. Demons hang out in a pack at the top of the screen, and attack in small squadrons. Kill all the demons as they descend on your planet. But every time you shoot them, they split into two or more new baby demons. Kill some more to reach the boss level, where a super-cool devil head spits out tons more demons. This game has excellent gameplay, graphics, and screechy sound effects.
Enduro- (Activision)
Much better than Atari's Pole Position or Nightdriver, Enduro was the racing game that wouldn't end. You go through a number of environments, driving in cities, deserts, and mountains. The graphics are cool. It gets darker at night, and lighter in the day. You try to beat the clock, getting bonus time to race on to the next checkpoint.
Megamania- (Activision) a very fun variation on the space invaders theme, your little starship has to shoot at a variety of targets that move across the screen following different horizontal, vertical, and diagonal lines. You have to avoid getting hit as well as keep blowing away those nasty aliens and asteroids. The gameplay on this one is lots of fun, and there are many different levels to beat.
Space Invaders- (Atari)
The classic home video game that everyone loves. I think it has like 50 versions of the game to play on the cartridge. Just kill the aliens and do it in a hurry!
Moon Patrol- (Atari)
This game had some of the best graphics at the time, and who doesn't love bouncing around in an outer space dune buggy equipped with missiles? The soundtrack is great too.
Pressure Cooker- (Activision)
Similar to the arcade version of Burgertime, your goal is to prepare hamburger orders using the correct ingredients and dropping the orders in the correct box. This game is challenging, and requires you to pay close attention or you'll be putting the ketchup where it's not supposed to go.
Missile Command- (Atari)
An alien invasion threatens your planet. Defend your cities or watch your cities fry. Kill the kamikazes. This game is kind of scary when it says "game over" because there’s a big explosion and all is lost. It’s scary in the same way that the TV movie "The Day After" was scary.
Joust- (Atari)
This is one of the best 2-player games, and it is lots of fun to battle your friends on a floaty ostrich. No shooting involved, just get on top of your opponent and dominate!
Kaboom- (Activision)
What else are the paddle controllers good for, if not Kaboom? Your goal is to catch the bombs dropped from the speedy little convict at the top of the screen. As you might guess, he just gets faster and faster until you blow it.
Circus Atari- (..um.. Atari)
This game is addictive and fun. Use the paddle controller to maneuver a springy see-saw that clowns bounce on. Pop the balloons overhead and catch the clowns, and score big. The springing sound is a monotone "Bnnnnnggggg!!". The balloon popping sound is a very metallic "Brrmp!!".
