Hello, and welcome to another trip down memory lane. On this particular trip, we will be taken back to the far away time of 1986, when a young eight year old was first introduced to the miracles of Console Gaming.
Once upon a time, there was a young boy who's largest joy in life was playing with his He-Man and Construx. Then one magical afternoon, while at home with the chicken pox, his father came home from work with a smile on his face, and a a bright red and silver box in his hands. The boy's eyes sparkled with curiosity and excitement.
The contents of this box would forever change the course of this young boy's life. It was a sleek, shiny new Atari 7800. Over the course of the next week, the little boy would stay out of his mother's hair without any conscious effort.
Stretched out on a pull-out couch, the little boy, clad in his Transformers Pyjamas, with Masters of the Universe Underwear beneath, would tap on a big red button with glazed eyes. Danger lurked 'round every corner. This mystical button allowed him to defend the universe from unknown evils, build hamburgers, box, blow lethal asteroids to smithereens, play pinball, protect teeth, and jump over pits. Saving the world and such, was only interrupted periodically for dabs of calamine lotion, naps and of course "Another World". At that time, he would return to his He-Men and Construx.
Hours upon hours were spent by the boy with this sleek, pointy machine. Many of those hours were shared as a family. But technology would eventually progress. The rest of the family would eventually be unable to cope with enhanced graphics, and more than one button... Hours spent as a family with new systems would be few and far between.
When that first week was over, and the flow of calamine had ebbed, the boy's love was still there. And it grew over time. Other machines would come and go... NES, Super NES, N64, Playstation... but none would ever be so entrancing, so mystic, so magical as the Atari had once been. You always remember your first.
