Give gamers some credit

Apr 03 '00

I've blown people to pieces, their heads spattered over the pavement, destroyed cities from the air, land, and sea. Never once did I even think that I was doing anything more than participating in an amusing exercise of the mind and a test of my reflexes. I don't want to kill people, I have a hard time killing spiders and stepping on worms. I am vehemently against real firearms of any sort and support the actual ban of them in the real world.

In the virtual world where no human bodily harm is done, guns, violence etc. hurts no one. Computer games aren't real! Thousands of adults play them on a daily basis, as games. Children have played with toy guns, swords, knifes and and slingshots for years, hunted each other in hide and seek, and played countless war-based games. As children grow the need for these sort of games is transferred into solving problems, reading books and playing more complicated games such as chess. As an adult I still enjoy puzzles, games and such. It grew out of my childhood. It is a way to challenge my mind in a manner unrelated to the problems I solve daily in my scientific work. Whether I play chess, RISK or Quake it is just a game pitting my intellect and imagination against an opponent, real or computer-generated.

I do believe that violent games should not be played by children so young that they cannot tell real from virtual. They should not be played by children without the supervision of an adult or the knowledge of an adult. Here is the failing of a lot of parents and I do not think that gamers and game production should be halted or criticized based on a population of negligent or uninformed parents. Children should be educated about the violence in games and the need for less violence in the real world. This is not a hard concept to get across. Watching the evening news and pointing out the real-world violence so prevalent in modern life should suffice. Most importantly children should be taught that the core of any PC game is not the gore content but the mental challenge, the puzzle inherent in any sort of complex game.
