This was the hottest thing on the market in the late 70's early 80's. I remember begging my parents for this when I was nine. I had my choice of getting the Intellivision game system or this Atari 2600. Well I picked Atari because I had played many of the games titles in the arcade.
Cost for this system was around 120 dollars and came with the classic Atari game Asteroids. Graphics for this system by todays standards were very poor. At that time though it was the greatest most amazing games ever. Most of the games you would use the joysticks. Some racing and other games you would use the game paddles. You hook this up to your television and all the games had color and sound effects.
This is a list of some of my favorite games that I used to spend hours and hours playing all the time.
Raiders of the lost ark
You take control of Indiana Jones in the quest to find the lost arc. Based on the popular movie this was probably one of the first ever first person action/adventure games. Your little stick figure like Indiana travels through many rooms and places collecting items he needs to find the ark. He uses a whip and a gun to kill snakes and bad guys. He collects items like grenades and a shovel and a staff and other items. Just like in the movie you need to find the clues throughout the game to get to were the ark is hidden. I never did find the ark in that game.
Donkey Kong
One of the classic arcade games back in those days. You control the big ape Donkey Kong through many rooms and levels. Jumping and swinging and running avoiding many obsticles. Graphics for this game were better then most of the other Atari games.
E.T.
Based on the popular movie you take control of E.T in trying to find a way to phone home. You have to solve many puzzles and collect items to help E.T make a machine to call home. You have to avoid the scientists trying to take E.T away. Another game like Raiders where you need to do some thinking and lots of surprises around every turn.
Space Invaders
Another game that was a classic arcade game. Not a lot to this game. You control a ship that sits on the bottom of the screen. You shoot up and move back and forth as a line of alien invaders move back and forth and then down. You clear the screen of the aliens and the next set move a little faster and are a little lower. You object was to just shoot as many aliens as you could before they eventually reached your ship.
Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back
Another game created from a popular movie. Not a whole lot to this game either. You control a rebel combat ship and try and destroy as many Imperial Walkers as you can. One of the better games for it's graphics and sound effects.
I still have my Atari 2600 although the joysticks really don't work to well anymore. I could though still hook this up and play it. I am sure any child who has not seen the new systems would enjoy the games still today. Games like Pac Man and Donkey Kong and Space Invaders are still popular titles today. Games and sound and graphics have come a LONG way since this old classic game system. I still would recommend this to anyone to see what gaming was like in the OLD days.
