| Jim22's Full Review: Combat Flight Simulator 3: Battle for Europe For W... |
I bought this game knowing it would be a good one. I have owned the original Flight Simulator since it's introduction and then moved on to the Combat Flight Simulator because I wanted to be able to do something besides look around while I was up in the air. Now the release of Combat Flight Simulator 2 has left my jaw on the desk! This game is by far the best air combat simulator I have played. Graphics, gameplay, sound...it's all here in one great package.
Now I am no pilot, I have never flown a plane and do not claim to know how or what it feels like. But the way the planes in this game react seem so realistic it blows my mind. I am using the Microsoft Force Feedback 2 joystick with this game and let me tell you it just makes it ten times better. I could never play this game without that joystick. When you go to take off and it practically shakes you out of your seat and you have to fight the control to stay on the runway, you know your playing an intense game. Another great force feedback moment is going into a dive bomb and then pulling back to level out. You can just feel the G-Force in the stick pulling against you!!
The graphics are truly groundbreaking. Real damage like your wingtip being shot off or bullet holes in the metal show that much time was spent on the details. There is even a puff of black smoke when you start your engine the first time. Now the damage YOU inflict can be seen by you on the other planes. Now you can see if you shot off the enemy's wing and move on to the next plane instead of waiting for them to hit the ground like in CFS1. The smoke trail when a plane is going down is a nice touch as well.
The sound is perfect. I love listening to the engine start. You hear the cranking of the engine struggling to turn it over and then the sputter when it finally does. Everything sounds very realistic and Microsoft did a great job reproducing the sounds.
You become much more immersed into CFS2 than CFS1 because of the storyline and the fact that your performance in one mission depicts what you do in the next.
Overall this is a superior flying game for those of you who like to do more then just observe the scenery from the air!
