What's the deal?

I for one don't understand all the commotion over this Pokemon thing. I have tried to play this game and I just don't understand it. My kids recieved all of the Pokemon games for Christmas and they thoroughly enjoy them. They seem to understand what they should be doing in this game. Maybe it is just meant for the younger generation. The cards, the games, the movies, the clothes, isn't it just a little much. I would love to hear any word out of my childs mouth as long as it doesn't include Pickachu, Charizard and the like. The whole idea of trying to collect all of these cards for your kids just so they can trade them off to other kids has me baffled.
