Always offering a large number of wonderful games for Mac computers, Ambrosia strikes again with Escape Velocity Override.
Escape Velocity Override is quite an interesting game. It is the update to the original Ambrosia game, Escape Velocity. The main difference between Override and the original is that in Override the galaxy is much larger, and you get a wider selection of adventures to follow.
The setting is 2246 and you are out in the galaxy, surrounded by planets from every direction. You start out with a small spaceship and a little bit of money. The goal and purpose of the game is to make money through different aspects, like hauling cargo and passengers around the galaxy. You will use this money to buy better ships and more features.
There are quite a few ways that you can play this game. You can play the game relatively in a low key nonviolent way by choosing only to haul cargo/passengers/medical supplies between the planets. In this aspect you earn all your money from basically being a transportation system. You can also look into some trading of supplies by buying items from one planet, find another where the item is selling at a higher price and sell the item there. You will find that playing the game this way soon becomes boring. The only excitement you get is attempting to deliver the supplies to the area in the set amount of time. Sometimes you can accept assignments in violent or war areas and once you go into this area, other ships will start shooting at you. If you want to have more action and adventure, you need to attempt to take over planets, shoot other ships, go into restricted areas, and so on.
The second way to play this game is in the violent “take over the world” type of attitude. You can choose to join a confederation of certain planets by accepting missions from them. Doing this will make this certain select group like and respect you, while many of the other planets will attempt to kill you. Your confederation will give you missions and offer you special assignments. Playing this way you will be able to feel you are part of an overall group, which will add to excitement.
You can also choose to go off by yourself, and take over the galaxy. You can shoot down other ships, make planets pay you fees, and basically make the entire world hate you. This is a very difficult way to play this game especially since you must save up enough money to buy the best ship and weapons possible so you don’t get killed.
The best part about Escape Velocity Override is that you can download hundreds of plug-ins and add-ons for the game. With this add-ons you can do almost anything - from giving yourself unlimited amounts of money to finding the best spaceship in the world. These add-ons also offer a huge selection of exciting adventures to follow - such as aliens invade the galaxy and you must stop them. Other add-ons available are things like maps, extra sounds, more ships to choose from, and more confederacies.
