Diving For Diamonds?

Feb 03 '00

This story isn't about how my husband proposed but rather how a friend of ours proposed to his girlfriend in what I thought was a very unique and memorable way. The night I became engaged wasn't fancy or original but I will remember it forever. My husband made me one of my favorite dinners, shrimp scampi, and right after he put dessert on the table he bent on one knee and proposed. This was classic and heartfelt and I will remember it as much as if he had blazed his proposal across the sky. However, he was in a band at the time and did make an announcement at a show he was playing the next night and I was besieged by well wishers.

Note: I am not necessarily recommending this as a good idea
but thought it was a cute story that ended up well. The
people involved in this story are both jokesters so it
fit them perfectly.

The friend I speak of really got his girlfriend good. He took her to dinner downtown in Little Italy and afterward they were taking a romantic moonlight stroll around the Inner Harbor. It was a warm spring night and he stopped her in a rather secluded spot and pulled a small box out of his pocket. After he proposed and was about to open the box, he slipped and it fell into the harbor. His girlfriend was quite ready to jump into the harbor after the box.

To understand the full effect of this you have to know that the harbor is a disgusting pit from all of the ships that travel it and the manufacturers around the area. If you fall in, you have to go and possibly have ear and eye treatments.

Anyway, before she could jump into the water, our friend pulled the real box with the ring out of his other pocket. His girlfriend, of course, wasn't sure if she should kiss him or strangle him. Our friend later joked that he had to keep mentally reminding himself which pocket held which box.

Oddly enough, this couple broke up before they made it to the aisle and my husband and I are about to celebrate our 10 year anniversary. Who knows, maybe the classic approach is better. ;-)
