A guaranteed smile...for under $10!

Dec 18 '99

Here's the scene at our house this morning....wrapping paper and ribbons strung across the dining room table. Ginger cookies baking in the oven. Andy Williams crooning The Twelve Days of Christmas from the cd player. My wife and stepdaughter hanging bears from the branches of our Christmas tree.

Bears?

Yes, folks...bears. And I can GUARANTEE that you can produce a smile at any household in America...in the world actually....with a simple purchase of under $10. They are called "Grateful Dead" Bears...inspired by the colorful artistic magic of the late Jerry Garcia of .... yes - you guessed it... The Grateful Dead band. A company named Liquid Blue has created these terrific gifts - and you've missed a rare opportunity if you haven't gotten a couple of them for your loved ones.

These bears are absolutely the CUTEST bears you're likely to ever lay your eyes upon. They are approximately five inches tall...the perfect size to fit inside a stocking... and they can also hang perfectly on a tree as one of the world's most unusual Christmas ornaments. Our tree has over 20 of them hanging up with all their various splashes of color and design. They are adorable... and they radiate one of the most powerful feelings one can have at the holiday season. What's that?

Happiness.

Happiness to the person who receives the bear... and happiness to the person who gives the bear. I have given one to my daughter - age 15 - and you would have thought I'd given her the keys to a brand new Lexus....she was absolutely enthralled. I've given one to my mother - age 70 - and her reaction was almost identical. And, I'm not kidding...the happiness I saw in their faces... and the happiness I felt at that moment was absolutely priceless.

They sell for around $8 each at specialty shops across the country. And they come in a wide variety of colors, hues and shades. There is "Candyman"...a delightful bear covered in red and green stripes. There's "Snowflake"...a perfectly colored light blue bear covered with white snowflakes. There's "Dark Star"...a purple bear with white moon and stars covering his exterior. And then there's my all time favorite..."Foolish Hearts"....in a wonderful shade of pink completely covered with white and pink hearts. There's even the only non-bear in the collection..."Terrapin"...a happy green turtle that screams out to all who see it...."hold me...and smile!"

In fact...there are over 40 different bears that have been released. You can go to www.liquidblue.com and see the various series....four in all...that comprise the sets. But you really can't begin to appreciate them until you pick one up and give it to someone you care about. Then the magic of an inexpensive gift that says... "I care about you...and I want to make you smile"...becomes readily apparent.

And yes...I do believe you will have to pick up a Grateful Dead bear or two for yourself. It's inevitable that you will do so when you see these bears. You can justify it by adding them to your Christmas tree as a special ornament that most people would never have considered.

But the real reason you'll keep a couple for yourself will be our secret. You know...the fact that they make YOU smile.

Happy Holidays.....
