A gift to last their lifetime

Jan 28 '00

This Christmas I wanted to think of something very special for all of our kids (we have 7 between us). Something that would have some lasting value.
Oh, they wanted the run of the mill toys, games etc but come on, after years of storing them, pitching them and getting them to keep things organized
and cleaned up, I just wanted to give them something special. Now that they're older (8 on up) I wanted to give them something of personal value.

My husband and I came up with, what turned out to be a great gift for all of them. We put together an album of family history but this isn't your run of the mill family tree. Yes, we did the grandma's, great's, great great's, and so on (a long with as many pictures of them as we could find) but we also added in our favorite pictures of each child. Pictures like, when they were one and had birthday cake all over their face and so on.
We also put in little stories of what they were like when they were little, funny things they said, silly things they did, favorite stories, and things like that. (Some where a little embarrassing to them, but I thought they were awfully cute). I also picked out a special poem for each child. One that I thought would encourage and describe them best. I tried to make them personal, their own.

You can be so creative with these. I used Microsoft word and printed out papers with little captions on them. I used paper I had on hand. The preprinted paper with Stars, scenery etc, which added to the look. Then I taped on the pictures and slipped them inside of clear plastic (sheet protectors). I put them in a three-ring hard cover notebook, made a collage of pictures to put on the front and "waala", you have a great gift. (Well it took a little more than "Waala" to put them together but it didn't take as much time as I had originally thought. About 20 hours total, remember, 7 kids!)

My final cost for 7 of them was a total of $40.00. Needless to say, I was very happy with the cost!

I thought they would like these but I had no idea just how much until they opened them up. I was amazed! From the eight year old up to the 27 year old. They loved them! After they looked through their own, they traded each other and the sharing of these went on for a couple hours. I also made the books so that I can or they can add to them on their birthdays or any time for that matter. I'm kind of a picture nut anyway so I'm always snapping pictures of them.

I think this is a gift that will be added to and treasured by many generations to come.
