Extended Warranties are A Good Deal
Apr 02 '00 (Updated Apr 07 '00)
I always invest in an extended warranty if I'm buying anything that's more substantial than a hand blender. And often, I'll use the warranty. I say it's a good deal.
Obviously, others disagree. Look at the other opinions on this topic and you'll see that the majority of them don't recommend buying extended warranties. Make up your own mind, considering your own unique situation. This is my take on the subject, for what it's worth.
Electrical equipment usually either fails in the first few years or it goes on forever, at least that's my experience. For the equipment that fails, an extended warranty is a good investment.
It may depend on where you buy the item
I'll admit to buying many of my appliances at Sears. For my experience, they've always been excellent at honoring the warranties and extended warranties with no hassle, and generally with good results. I suppose I'd be slower to recommend an extended warranty from a place that I don't trust, but I wouldn't shop there anyway, at least not twice. I've been getting major appliances at Sears for more years than I care to tell, and haven't been disappointed with their service on extended warranties yet. (I can't say the same for Wards.)
It's a gamble
True, it's a gamble. You're betting something will go wrong. That's a minimal bet, however, when you're looking at the difference between the cost of a new refrigerator and the cost of an extended warranty. Besides, when I buy an appliance, I have money. When it breaks down, there's a chance that I'll be in that awful between state when I don't have money. I'd rather take care of the cost when I have the money in my pocket.
Your experience can vary from this, of course. Maybe in your area, or with the vendors you deal with, an extended warranty is not a good choice. For me, so far, it has been, and I'd recommend it.
