Brownies from scratch...as easy as from a box!

Dec 25 '99 (Updated Dec 29 '99)

Passed around for almost 30 years, I'm not sure where this recipe originally came from! It's called "Velda's Brownies" and it's as easy as anything from a box...provided you substitute 6 Tbl of cocoa for the 2-1 oz squares of chocolate! Tastes better than "from the box" brownies...and people will be awed by the fact that you made them from scratch!

3 Tbl cocoa = 1 oz chocolate

2-1 oz squares unsweetened chocolate
1/2 cup butter
1 cup granulated white sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 cup sifted white flour
1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Mix butter, cocoa, sugar and vanilla.
Mix in eggs.
Stir in flour.
Grease 9x9x12" pan with butter and dust with flour.
Pour mixture into pan and bake at 350 degrees until toothpick inserted into center comes out clean (30-40 minutes).
Cool and then cut into squares.
