Pros: Tons of bandwidth Cons: Support ranges from 'curt' to 'openly hostile'
My experience with Dreamhost was positive at first. Although their admin control panel was impossible to navigate, they offered way more bandwidth than anyone else for a good price. But then the outages started. It seems like they really, really ...
Pros: Great Features, liberal access to your own account, good value. Cons: Database downtimes are becoming a big problem, considering moving the site.
This is my 3rd hosting company, and I've been with DH for about a month now. I chose Dreamhost due to alot of the features such as command line access, multiple sub-domains, good control panel, etc. The value has also been very good. Dreamhost has ...
Pros: Falling prices.
Rising service caps.
Growing feature list. Cons: Bitten off more customers than they can handle and it's showing.
This is an update to the the earlier review, which appears below in its entirety: July 2006 - Support and service continues to decline. On any given day, it seems, something will be down, unavailable, or just plain irritating with my service. ...
Pros: used to be a very good hosting provider in `04 Cons: Gilligans Island mentality (no phone, no lights, no motorcar :P)
I am not sure if it is growing pains or what, but, DreamHost ("DuH")has gone from a relatively good hosting provider to a virtual Nightmare as of late. I have been with them for a little over a year now and the past four months have been sheer ...
Pros: Low price, easy web panel admin Cons: no tech support number, slow to respond to tech issues, too much downtime
Dreamhost was a great service... I have been with them since 1998. Recently the service has gone downhill... as I write this, I my email is down again... seems to be down at least once a month if not more. There is no telephone number to reach them ...
Pros: NONE WHATSOEVER Cons: THEIR F*** OFF ATTITUDE TO COMPLAINING CLIENTS AND THE ABOVE REASONS WHY THEY'RE CRAP
Dreamhost host a site (www.gomechewatch.com) which is blatently destroying the lives of my family and myself. My MP has written to the British Home Secretary about this site and we have succeeded in getting it shut down by more responsible hosting ...
Pros: Fast connection, serious uptime and all around great hosting company Cons: No ASP and telephone support only available on higher level plans.
DreamHost is by far the best hosting company Ive used. I build websites and Ive dealt with dozens of hosting companies. I recommend DreamHost to all of my clients and I use them for my sites. There are so many positives and few negatives. ...
Pros: None. Cons: They offer no phone support, limited email support, and ignore you when they screw up.
First Dreamhost accidentally shut down my clients site after he took out a 5K ad in the New Yorker. Then they ignored a request to switch from yearly hosting to monthly hosting and billed my client for the full year against their wishes, and refuse...
Pros: Relatively inexpensive Cons: Not good for e-commerce, uncaring attitude, inconsistent customer service
DreamHost "offers" Miva shopping cart hosting, but they only have one person trained in Miva support, so if your store has a problem when that person is gone - good luck!
My store has been down for almost 3 weeks, and I am in the process of...
Pros: Features, price, customer service Cons: No phone support, setup fee if you don't pay a year in advance
I've been hosting with Dreamhost for about a year and a half. I'm more of a 'hobbyist' than a professional web designer, but I host 8 domains, and have been doing web development for about 6 years. I don't plan on ever switching to another host unless I...
Pros: Cheap price, you can upgrade your service easily Cons: no phone support- heck, no support at all! terrible uploading
Although the price is low, you can count on terrible service, and no means to talk to a live person. Even I know of several means to have live technical support via the web or a more thorough FAQ area.
It often took days to fix errors, that were...
Pros: Reliable, very low downtime rates, good prices, great customer service, "price freeze" Cons: Wouldn't recommend for businesses
I have been using Dreamhost for almost 2 years now, and I have never been unsatisified with their services! Let me tell you some of the great things about this company.
I have used several other hosts for my other domains, and compared to...
Pros: Easy to use web panel, great support Cons: None!
I've been using Dreamhost for about 9 months to host my personal website, moosedogtoo.com and I just added another personal site, nickandlaurel.com. I have been very pleased with the service that I have received.
Pros: Reasonable Price, Many Features Available Cons: Some features may seen complicated for beginners.
When looking for a company to host a customer's site, I went to Epinions.com and did some research. Dreamhost has excellent plans, with a wide variety of features available. For only $9.95 (paid in advance) they supplied: 30 MB storage, 3 pop email...
Pros: Good hosting plans; economical prices; great online control panel! Cons: No telephone support.
After my experiences with 5 Bucks a Month as the web host for my personal sites (documented in my review of that provider), I was looking for a new provider with more reliable service, even if I had to pay a little more for it. It happens that, a...
Pros: Excellent customer service, broad range of features. Cons: None
After having a horrible experience with several other web hosting services, I decided to go from small, local services, to a larger company. After shopping for awhile, I chanced upon Dreamhost, over 8 months later, I'm still in awe of their service and...
Pros: Fun, friendly, helpful employees Cons: No phone support
Two summers ago, I started playing on the web. My first web site was hosted for free on Netscape and created with almost no HTML know-how. A couple months later, I switched the page over to my college's server. But when I graduated, I had to find a new...
Too many service outages and problems and excuses. Impossible to phone custoemr support.
Then the final straw was they just deleted _everything_ from my account.
I had it on automatic credit card renewal. They send out so much spam email on status, domain renewal, and other useless stuff that I just filtered this to an email folder and never read it.
So when I realized it needed payment I manually renew the credit card payment and log in to find everything gone. Going back reading the email there was no warning of deletion etc.
No Refund - it can be only your dream by jazzybeat ,Aug 01 '07
Pros: Cheap Price, A lot of futures, Cons: poor customer support, no_phone_to_call, they promise, no money back, hi load problems.
I use DH to host my 2 domains. One was mine and second was my wife. After 5 month we stat experiencing a lot of problems with DH hosting. Almost once a day I found my domains temporary down. I submitted over 20 complain tickets to DH. DH answer to these emails was "there will always be the possibility of a high load issues but I was left with promises that they will do the best. Well for about 3 months i was giving them a chance to prove, but it didn't work out. So I decide to cancel my service for two accounts. Before I cancel my accounts I ask DH to prove that they going to return my Remaining Balance. They prove this in the email that I will receive this Money back once I will cancel my account. 2 months passed and I didn't got anything. I wrote to DH asking where is my remaining balance and the answer I got from customer support person was "I have been told not to refund the funds and I cannot circumvent the decision that been made.
So this is can be your future dream hosting provider :-)
Pros: Disk space, bandwidth allotment (good luck fully using it though), one-click installs. Cons: Reliability is in the toilet since mid 2006.
I joined Dreamhost in summer 2004 and was reasonably satisfied until the great meltdown of summer 2006. A power outage at their data center kicked off http://blog.dreamhost.com/2006/08/01/anatomy-of-an-ongoing-disaster/ and instability. When you're celebrating your 100,000th domain, not having redundancy for core services is not acceptable, I don't care what people are paying.
Since mid 2006 it's been some kind of small outage every week, and some kind of large outage every couple months.
Most recently, all of their DNS servers died. At once. This is ridiculous.
You get what you pay for. In this case, you're paying for a huge amount of disk and some shiny one-click software installs on a host that can't keep services running reliably from day to day, and which suffers some kind of meltdown every few weeks.
What good are the features if you can't load your site?
Pros: A humorous monthly newsletter Cons: Poor overall service, frequent downtime, buggy software, non-reliable e-mail, inconsistent customer service
I've hosted numerous Web sites with Dreamhost.com over the past four years. At first, they delivered great service for a great price. Their quality, however, has gradually but consistently deteriorated from great to sub-standard. Frequent downtime, broken software components, software glitches, e-mail problems, poor and unresponsive customer service characterize what used to be a great hosting company.
Pros: Cheap, Lots of features Cons: Downtime, No tech support phone number, Unresponsive tech support
Dreamhost may be ok for personal use, but it is far too unreliable for business use. Their servers, their routers constantly go down in the middle of the business day. So we had to get a third party web host monitoring service and send Dreamhost an email when it went down! Their response was usually like "oh we didn't even notice it was down"! We had a better idea of our site uptime than they did.
Support is bad. There's no number to call and although they have an option where you can for support to call you back (up to 5 a month), they rarely actually call back and when they do, the people on the phone have no power to do anything to correct problems in the long term. It's cheap and you get what you pay for. They received an "F" from the California Better Business Bureau.
Great Value with Promo Codes by beatingtheodds ,Jul 02 '06
Pros: Best value, lots of storage and bandwidth. Cons: No Cpanel option but I got used to their control panel.
I have been hosting with dreamhost for about a year after a terrible time with my previous host. I could not have asked for a better value, as I have gotten a year of hosting and a free domain name registration for under $30 (Use Promo Code 30AYEAR). I have 20 gb of disk space and 1TB of bandwidth which is much more than I'll ever use. If you don't want to sign up for an annual plan they also have monthly options. (You can waive the setup fee with the promo code NOSET) Overall best bang for the buck that I have found.
One Terabyte Bandwidth??? by wthompsonjr ,Mar 18 '06
Pros: Low cost, high bandwidth, 20gb space, unlimited domains hosted Cons: Non dedicated hosting, slightly higher downtime
I couldn't really believe it when I read this for the price they are giving for web hosting. And they also support affiliate coupons, so I got an awesome deal for the first year of hosting. I have yet to find better hosting for a better price, no joke. The pros:
ד TB bandwidth
㩈 MB webspace
Unlimited domains hosted! Unlimited subdomains!
(this is awesome, you can have every website/domain
you own hosted with one account)
ד Free domain name
Mailboxes, 75 Shell/FTP Users
Top rate customer service
㪕 day money back guarantee
The cons:
Just a tiny bit more downtime so far than most hosts, but that really hasn't been a big problem at all.
Not dedicated hosting, but for this price, I wouldn't expect it.
I've been using this hosting for about 6 months now, and have and completely happy!
Someone gave me a an awesome promo code to sign up, so now I'd like to give a good deal to someone else.
Just use this promo DHinsanedeal68 and only pay $4.17/mo!!
Pros: Large diskspace and bandwith.
Nice controlpanel
Shell access
Multiple Domains. Cons: CPU limit
Not easy to resell with controlpanel.
If you're looking for a unix shared host dreamhost is certainly a good option.
Allowing multiple domains and a large disk space makes the only real limit the cpu team used. But when you dont need fancy php scripts this wont be a problem. And if you do depend on cpu intensive php you should be considering a dedicated server.
Having multiple shell users and the ability to create groups gives you create flexibility to manage your domains.
The control-panel is not that advanced but it works and allows you to do almost everything. If not you can always use you shell access. The bad thing about the controlpanel that it is not really suited for resellers, its almost a dirty hack to give your customers access to the controlpanel. But if you experiment a little you will figure out how to do it.
Their support is slow (1-2 days) but very helpfull. I havent had any outages so I do not know how they deal with those.
P.S. use the coupon "SAVE90DOLLAR" for a 90 dollar discount (less on monthly plans)
excellent host.. fast service.. best prices.. use "DREAMCOUPON" by mrscoot ,Jan 05 '06
Pros: fast customer support, excellent prices (using coupons like: "DREAMCOUPON") Cons: havent found any yet..
ive been with them for a year now.. and have just renewed my plan with them.. they are reliable.. offer tons of features.. and have the most competitive packages..
they continuously add improvements.. and have quick support. my only negative experience was during the LA blackout.. but since then.. they have significantly improved their backup services.. high quality host.. and great prices..
they now have a 20 gig diskspace promo.. on their $8/month package.. but they have great promotions.. use the coupon
"DREAMCOUPON"
to get that plan for about $22 for the whole year.. its crazy! hard to believe.. but ive been with them for the past year and they have only proved their quality..
Not the Best but For the Price? Come on... by avermat ,Dec 26 '05
Pros: Cheap, cheap, cheap, great control panel Cons: Uptime isn't the best, customer service isn't the best
Ok I will make this short and sweet and give you an $80 coupon. If you are looking for a quality and reliable host I would not recommend Dreamhost. I have not been satisfied with their uptime and a tiny bit unsatisfied with customer service...BUT I was not expecting either of those things... and to be honest your going to run into the same problems with any budget hosting company. So this is not to say that I am not satisfied. For what I paid, I am MORE than pleased, and I believe they have good intentions, but they are growing fast! If you are a nonserious customer who just wants to get your site up on the web, these guys won't do you wrong. Here's a coupon for $80 off any yearly plan...coupon code = "80DOLLA". Enjoy.
Don't expect great customer service. by heynicepants ,Oct 05 '05
Pros: They're awesome if you like getting ripped off. Cons: Not sympathetic to loyal customers, bad policies.
After being a Dreamhost customer for 5 years, I wanted to cancel my account. After a miscommunication due to an out of date e-mail address, my account was suspended. In good faith I paid my $119 to Dreamhost expecting all of my websites, mailing lists, and emails to be there and back to normal. Well, everything was gone. This happened to me twice! When I attempted to cancel my account the very same day that I paid, they said that their "97 day money back gaurantee" was based on the day I opened my account FIVE YEARS AGO and not the day I paid for my next year of service! Instead of giving me back my money for the 10 months I didn't use, they offered me Dreamhost CREDIT! What am I going to do with hosting credit when I don't even want a website anymore? On top of this they have no support phone number you can call.
Pros: Friendly service, multiple changeable domains, money-back guarantee, promotional discounts. Tons of features Cons: None
Dreamhost is the best service in my opinion after using several different hosts. One key point is that they allow multiple domains and let you change the domains that you're hosting. This is nice if you like to play with multiple domains. They also offer and standby a 3-month money back if you're not happy. Furthermore, with discount coupons, your first year of hosting can be dirt cheap. I used the coupon/promo code "MAXIMUM" which gave the most discount ($97) on all their plans.
Dreamy, but occasionally flaky by Windowphobe ,Jul 31 '05
Pros: Almost always up, lots of tools in their panel, sprightly non-techie communication Cons: No phone support at lower levels, not much help on non-open-source Web software
I switched my blog to Dreamhost at the beginning of 2002. Migration was a snap, and the DNS updates were speedy.
In the three and a half years since then, site downtime has been minimal (maybe 72 hours). Adding a content-management system - in my case, Movable Type - complicated matters slightly, but only slightly: a seemingly-endless stream of Perl scripts makes for occasional slow response. (Readers, unless they're actually using the interactive features, seldom if ever notice.)
More important, I think, is the fact that MT is a commercial third-party CMS which they can't support, and if you have MT troubles, Dreamhost can't be much help in determining whether the problem is in MT or in their server setup.
Phone support for their lowest-price product is nonexistent, and limited at the next rung; I have never actually needed it, though, and in my experience they answer their email within 24 hours (although seldom within 12). If you know what you're doing, this is a good, reliable host; if you're a little fuzzy on the details, you might be better served elsewhere. I'm content enough to let them handle two of my other domains.
Pros: Low Pricing
Frequent deals and specials
Quality service
High uptime Cons: No CPanelX (I like that particular piece of software :) )
First of all, if you decide to use DreamHost, put in the promo code "EPINIONS" when you're signing up. It's worth $30 off, and not many people know about it.
My experience with DreamHost has been well above par. I've been using them for my personal blog, along with several contracted business sites without a single problem. The pricing and service quality are great.
Pros: cheap, nice people Cons: goes down about 1 time per month for a few hours
I run ppcmsupport.net, a non profit support group for women living with congestive heart failure related to pregnancy. I started with dreamhost because their plans are inexpensive, and I'd heard great things about their service. A few times I've been frustrated with them, because the site will go down for a couple of hours here and there, but then I realize that occasionally that is to be expected, however, it has happened a few more times than I care to count lately. I'm counting on them to get the current problem fixed and return to their usual reliable selves. Other than that, I've never had any problems with them, their customer service is always friendly, even though they are a bit slow at responding due to understaffing. I'd recommend going with them over and above godaddy.com.
Pros: Easy to set up and use, great control panel Cons: Non-professional staff and practices, no phone support
As far as features and ease-of-use go, Dreamhost is a great service. I have used them to host over 30 domains for nearly 3 years and have been mostly satisfied. HOWEVER, a word of warning: their billing department has messed things up more than once, and they seem to be incompetent. I have also heard from others that their staff has behaved in a non-professional manner more than once. If it were not for these issues, along with the fact that they offer no phone support, I would recommend Dreamhost. However, these complaints are unfortunately significant enough for me to recommend that you save yourself some peace of mind and look somewhere else for hosting.
The worst experience in my career by ianmclellan ,Mar 29 '04
Pros: They do promise a very low cost package. Cons: They do not deliver any customer support or promised service.
One word.....disappointment.....
That basically sums up my experience with dreamhost.com I moved to their service about two weeks ago and I have had nothing but problems. In 15days, I have lost email for 3days. There is no telephone support, and when you finally find a phone number by going to Network Solutions and search for their number from whois, you get a recording that tells you "We feel that the telephone is a relic of the ancient past and email is the wave of the future" so email all technical support issues. That would be fine if your email worked, Oh, I'm sorry, when their service is down, you have no email, therefore no support. Their quality of service seems to be the relic of the ancient past, or more like the dotcom bust of not so far past. For the price of it all, it would be a better value to ask your neighborhood children to host your website and email on their network of string and tin cans that stretch from treehouse to treehouse. In my opinion that would be about the same value
Pros: Value for money, Secure, Reliable and Quick Cons: No phone support (though this hasn't caused me any problems)
I've been with Dreamhost since September 2003 and I've been very impressed with their overall service. Their web control panel is very powerful and allows you to administer all aspects of your account. You're kept fully informed of everything that's going on via the control panel and email. Downtime has been minimal and their service has always been fast and reliable. Support is via email and call-back (if you are in the States). Support is fairly quick and the control panel records all support communication between them and yourself.
The one thing that swung it for me was the fact that their support forums are publicly viewable and postable, and they encourage prospective customers to ask question about them via the board. This allows existing customer to have their say and post their issues and problems (without censor) - very brave of Dreamhost. But then if you've got happy customers...
Use the coupon code "MAXSAVING" for a discount of up to $96.
Pros: Customer support, uptimes, so much features. Cons: Well the control panel is slow for me, but it could be my PC.
I've been hosting with them for over two years now. I bought the second cheapest host and let me tell you, I started off with this:
150 MB of space
5 Gig of bandwidth
5 Subdomains
5 FTP (I think) accounts
and etc etc... Well that's all I could remember. For the span over two years, they've been giving their customers more and more and I am now at:
1000 MB of space
30 gig of bandwidth
35 Subdomains
35 FTP accounts
and so much more and I am still paying at the same price. I've never had any problems with them, and their customer supports are so nice. I would recommend anyone to them.
Dreamhost - there is no substitute! by dgiacom ,Oct 30 '03
Pros: Great value, host multiple domains under one account, great control panel Cons: Must upgrade for phone support
I own a small web development and IT consulting company and wanted to say I've never found a hosting company that allows such easy management of multiple domains under one account. My advice is to start with the $10/month plan and add "booster packs" as you add more domains. The initial plan allows for up to 4 domains under the same space. Adding a booster pack for $60/year allows you 3 additional domains to manage under the same account and space. I now have 3 booster packs and 13 domains under one account. When I outgrow the space I will upgrade to the $20/month, 400 meg plan. What an incredible deal this is and I know of NO other hosting service that will allow me to do all this under a single account for this price.
I strongly recommend this hosting company! They really are the best.
