Does It Hurt Them? `

Oct 18 '00

This is a very sensitive subject for me. After trying for fourteen years, I finally had a son. Of coarse it was my 5th try, and 4 girls later there he was. I was so happy and elated I could not stand it.

I remember thinking after a few hours of holding him, that I had to make the decision of circumcising him or not. Now, I am not a religious person, so religion had nothing to do with my decision. But I had many friends with son's and some were and some weren't. And the one's that weren't, well let me just say, it looked like there was just too much skin there. So I decided I would do it. Besides, the doctor said that he wouldn't feel a thing and it would heal up in a day or two. After it was done, and all the hassle of it, I wished I had waited and read more on it. Cause I would have never done it, if I knew then, what I know now. And this is why:

His second day of life. My precious little, red haired son. It was time for them to take him away and get circumcised. The doctor recommended I stay in the room and not watch. You know why they ask that. Because it is horrifying to watch. First of they take their clothes off, then they lay them down on a cold table so they can be more uncomfortable, then comes the painful deed of cutting off their skin. As I stood there in horror, I watched my son screaming so loud and the tears rolling down his face and mine for the matter. It was awful. There was no pain killer, no nothing to ease their pain. The doctor had the sheer audacity to tell me he didn't feel anything. The hell he didn't, let me cut your skin off your penis with no pain killer and you tell me if you felt it. Shoot.

And that was not the worst part. The doctor had accidentally, (I love that word when doctors say it.) cut to much skin off one side, so my son needed 4 stitches as well and we would see how well it healed. Well, it healed, but not the way it should have because of the stitches. So at 6 months old, my husband and I had to take him and have the procedure done again to fix the problem. Luckily my sweetness was put to sleep and never felt a thing. And today is a healthy 2 year old.

What I suggest to all of you parents who are considering circumcision, make sure you want to do it, don't do it cause everyone else does, know the doctor that does it, and one last thing, just because they are babies and you think that they do not feel the pain, you watch when the procedure is happening and you will think differently. I did.
