Breastfeeding: The Best Start for Your Baby!

Feb 25 '00

When I first found I was pregnant, I started reading every book on pregnancy and breastfeeding that I could put my hands on. As soon as I learned that breastfeeding would provide the best nutrition for my baby, I was sold!

We were lucky because it was very easy for us. I had read all the books, and everything worked like it should. My son started nursing right away, and never stopped. To make it easy on us, and because I was very sore after a C Section, my son slept in bed with us at night. Nursing involved just turning over, and having him latch on!

I nursed him where ever I was, and whenever he needed to. It was a wonderful, bonding experience! I never felt more at peace than when I was sitting in a rocking chair, gazing down at my beautiful baby, contentedly nursing. I was sorry that my husband could not experience this unique closeness.

Breast milk is the best nutrition a baby can get. It is also free, and extremely convenient. It provides immunities to little babies that gives them an excellent start in life. But, above all, nursing provides a wonderful, bonding experience between mom and baby.

Yes, I had some minor problems. I did suffer from chapped and sore nipples, but discovered that Vitamin E capsules, applied to the nipples a few times a day, worked wonders. I wore breast shields to avoid leakages, and I was on call all the time. But I learnt to pump and, while that never worked as well for me as for other women I have talked to, I was able to pump enough to get a break once in awhile. These problems were only minor compared to the huge benefits derived from nursing.

I was lucky because I worked out of my home when my son was an infant, so I was able to feed him anytime. However, I have many friends who nursed while they worked full time, away from the home. Yes, it takes a little work and organization, but, remember, baby benefits. I also accept that the nursing experience is not as easy for everybody. But, to give your baby the right start in life, I definitely recommend nursing.

My son stopped nursing by himself when he was fifteen months old. I didn't have to wean him; he chose the time to stop. I felt incredibly sad for a few days, missing the closeness that nursing allowed.

Nursing was a wonderful experience for me, and I highly recommend it. There are many books available for first time moms, and organizations like La Leche League are very supportive. Giving my son the best start in life was not a hard choice for me. It just made common sense.
