Maxed out on Morning Sickness (enough is enough)!

Nov 02 '00 (Updated Nov 22 '00)

Being pregnant was such a joy. Sure, there was a little life growing inside of me. A baby I was nurturing, who was being anticipated with much excitement and joy.

And then, there were the really joyous things about being pregnant. For instance, the need to pee every hour on the hour of every single day from the third month on. Oh, and the need (and I do mean need) to eat a whole bag of salt and vinegar potato chips directly followed by an entire bottle of chocolate Yoohoo. Or the intense need for my husband to get up at midnight to drive to Taco Bell to pick up his adoring (and ravenous) wife two orders of Nacho Supreme Tacos and a side of Cinnamon Twists. I craved watermelon, I craved peanuts, I craved filet mignon and western omelets smothered with mustard (yes, mustard)...in fact, you name it, I craved it.

I also threw it up.

Not just in the morning, either. We're talking any hour of any day of any given week. I could crave something, and the next minute the smell of it would make me go weak in the knees. I could throw up by just thinking of throwing up. It was not a good place to be.

My husband loves to tell the story of our anniversary dinner of three years ago, when I was five months pregnant with our youngest daughter. My body was screaming for fondue, and we got all dressed up and headed out for a nice romantic (and expensive) dinner at the restaurant on the lake across town. Fondue is my absolute favorite indulgence in the world, and knowing this, my husband spared no expense when ordering the finest dishes on the menu. I ate until I could eat no more.

I also threw it up.

In the parking lot. Immediately upon exiting the restaurant. I'm not sure if my husband was a little perturbed because (a) I'd just thrown up a $150 meal or (b) I ruined his brand new dress shoes.

Needless to say, I only vaguely remember it all happening (ahem), though my husband is quite fond of reminding me every time I mention the word "fondue" in his presence.

Eventually (and I mean by the eighth month or so), the nausea subsided. Thank heaven.

For some of us, morning sickness will last only a few months; for others, the entire pregnancy. Rest assured that it will end!

In the mean time, there are a few "tricks" you can try to quelch those nauseous feelings:

-- Saltine crackers: We've all heard of this one. Dry toast can also substitute, in a pinch. I found it helpful in the morning if I ate one or two even before putting my feet on the bedroom floor.

-- Diet. And no, I don't mean "weight loss". Eat a diet high in protein and complex carbohydrates -- both of them fight nausea.

-- Drink fluids. Sometimes fluids are easier to get down than solids when you're feeling queasy. Avoid caffeine and carbonation, which can add to the effect.

-- Check your prenatal vitamin. In my first pregnancy, I had to switch to a different type of vitamin. My original prescription was for a vitamin that was high in iron -- something that can make you extremely nauseous if your body isn't used to an excess of iron in your system, or if you're iron sensitive.

-- Watch the foods you eat/smell. Obviously, foods can make you nauseous (particularly things that are strong in flavor or spicy). If you have a smell aversion, stay away from crowded restaurants or under-vented kitchens. Avoid spicy foods and stick to more bland choices, at least until the nausea subsides.

-- EAT OFTEN. Perhaps the key to heading nausea off before it happens, an empty stomach allows your blood sugar level to drop. Eating several times a day will keep you on an even keel.

-- Don't mind your mother. Nevermind what Mom said about not eating in bed, or near bedtime. Before going to sleep at night, have a cracker or cookie (or rice cake, or muffin, or anything else high in carbohydrates) and you might sleep better and FEEL better when you wake up.
