Morning Sickness CURES . .
Feb 04 '00 (Updated Mar 29 '01)
The Bottom Line This is a collection of remedies that have actually worked for me and for many other Epinions members. Please read and add your own effective remedies.
Why "they" call it morning sickness I will never understand. I wonder if "they" ever really experienced it? My experience with this ailment is that it can occur at ANY time during the day! It generally lasts for the first 3 months of pregnancy, and varies in its severity from woman to woman, and even pregnancy to pregnancy. I also want to share that my obstetricians have assured me that it is a sign of a "healthy pregnancy", and means that you have alot of the "pregnancy hormone" in your body if you experience it.
I want to preface this Epinion by stating the obvious. . . what worked for me might not work for every pregnant woman experiencing morning sickness. I am only going to describe what worked (for me) and encourage everyone to add (in the comment section) what really worked for you.
I am pregnant now with my second miracle, and had terrible morning sickness with both (not quite as bad this time). Lots of things were suggested to me, but many things (such as munching on saltines) did very little to ease my discomfort!
What did work, was eating a shaving of fresh ginger whenever a wave of nausea would hit me. I experimented with all forms of ginger, such as ginger snaps, ginger root from the food store, and ginger herbal (decaffeinated) teas. The type of ginger that worked the best, and it's effect was almost immediate for me, was the shaved ginger that is typically served with sushi. You can buy it in a little plastic container wherever sushi is sold (they sell freshly made sushi in some of the "super food stores" in my state. Of course the freshest comes with the sushi. I happen to LOVE wasabi sauce with California Roll (cooked imitation crab meat with avocado, cucumber & rice wrapped in seaweed.) so this was where I got mine. WARNING: Do not eat raw fish when you are pregnant!!!
This remedy will sound a little odd (it did to me when my aunt suggested it; she is a nurse that takes care of & counsels pregnant woman from city clinics). . . potato chips!!!! Yes, you read correctly! For some reason potato chips really go down well & make you feel "good" while they are there! (I realize that you don't have to be blessed with creating a new life in order to experience this blissful state!) I like Ruffles low-fat chips the best. Warning: PLEASE do not eat the fat-free potato chips with that newly approved fat substitute in them; I think it's called "olestral". This substance has been *proven* to carry important nutrients OUT of your body, before they can be digested, when it leaves your body!
The above two items, fresh ginger and potato chips were the only foods that made a significant difference in how I felt when I was experiencing nausea. I want to also recommend that you listen to your body!!! If something makes you nauseous, stay away from it. If you crave dairy products (I did/do), eat them. If you crave meat (I am NOT a big meat eater, but seem to crave it when I'm pregnant. Several of my friends experienced the same phenomena.) I believe your body has cravings because it needs more of the types of foods you crave.
PLEASE, if you have had success with something that helped your nausea, please add a comment below to help women suffering from morning sickness! Please do not add a suggestion unless you KNOW it has worked for yourself or someone you know!
I want to end this Epinion with a plea to any pregnant woman who is experiencing SEVERE morning sickness to please make sure your obstetrician knows ALL of your symptoms! It is VERY important that you don't become dehydrated!!!

TOO funny! :-), by pennangel
Oh Susan, I ended up giggling halfway through this. You'd said to write a comment if anything else helped for morning sickness and I thought "wonder if I'd be laughed at if I mention potato chips?" And in another paragraph or two, you mentioned it. :-) Well, my daughter is a teen now, and yes chips helped, but I'll add that they help for *any* of my tummy upsets, far beyond the pregnancy I had. If only I could get *chocolate* to do the same!
Morning Sickness, by ingridjen
Fortunately for me, I experienced very little morning sickness with either of my daughters. With my oldest I experienced mild night sickness. Saltine crackers is all I would eat whenever this would occur.
And where were you????, by tiffer0220
And where was this epinion when I was pregnant and experiencing terrible bouts of morning, afternoon, night-time, and middle of night sickness??? Only thing anybody ever told me was to eat crackers and they did not help at all!

Thanks for the tips!, by mcangell
I hope to expecting very soon and will try this if needed. Another idea that really worked for me was lemonade! I drank so much of it with my first pregnancy I was convinced my son was going to come out with a permanent "pucker" on his lips! Also, just sniffing a freshly cut lemon helps too.
Thanks
Michelle

Great Review!, by amyartiste
I thought ginger worked very well, but never tried the potato chip cure! I'll have to pass that idea on to a pregnant friend. My variation on the lemonade was to suck on very sour lemon popsicles. I had severe nausea from morning to night and sipping almost any drink made me feel queasy. I got the benefit of lemon from my popsicles, but didn't have to guzzle it. :)

Twinkies, Bananas, by casey215
Ugh! Morning sickness. My worst nightmare. I had it all day, everyday, for three pregnancies. I found the things that worked with one pregnancy didn't work with another. First pregnancy was Twinkies, and not just any creme filled cake, it had to be Hostess twinkies. The first thing I did when I got up in the morning was reach for a twinkie-don't ask me why it worked, but it did. :-) Second pregnancy was bananas. Funny how my second child doesn't like Bananas at all. For my last pregnancy it was graham crackers. My last pregnancy I was so sick that I literally felt like I had the stomach fu for 7 of the 9 months. But I found that if I focused on one item that I could force down when nothing else appealed to me, I could avoid that vicious low blood sugar induced nausea. Hope this helps someone. I feel nauseous just remembering....(shiver)
Great epinion!!, by ahines
I was going to suggest lemons, but someone already did. This was the one and only thing that helped me with my morning (ALL DAY/ALL NIGHT) sickness! I would buy fresh lemons, cut them up and squeeze them in my water! I wouldn't drink true lemonade, but I made lemon water!!! Or, I would just chew on the lemon by it's self! I have also heard of women sucking on those Lemon Head candy...
There is just something about lemon!!! Thanks for your article. I hope I will be needing to refer to it really soon, because I hope to become pregnant again!
I went bananas, by gwenk
I see I was beaten to the banana cure! It worked for me when I would get queasy in the morning. Of course, one of my co-workers who was pregnant with me would absolutely go green when she smelled my banana. Poor thing. Oranges were her addiction.
GINGER, by diemrae
Ginger is also great for children that suffer from motion sickness. I never take a long car trip without it.
Saltines and gingerale, by frazzledspice
worked for me...I don't even know if I'd ever heard of sushi when my oldest was born in 1975!
