My four year old son loves his Brio set, so when he received a battery powered engine for Christmas from his Grandmother, he was thrilled. The excitement was quickly replaced by frustration. The engine runs great on its own, but sputters and stops when attached to the other magnetic cars.
One of the great joys of the Brio set is its simplicity, and the interactive quality of play missing from many electric or battery powered train sets. My son would spend hours on his stomach, pulling the trains over the bridges and up the hills. In an age when so many toys involve pushing a button and watching what happens, I was pleased to see my son enjoy doing things the old fashioned way.
Needless to say, when a toy does not work, a child becomes frustrated and quickly loses interest. After one day of explosions and tears, we took the battery out. I would not recommend this toy; it's not worth the frustration that results.
