Breastfeeding Is An Issue?
Aug 08 '00
It's too bad women who are being excellent moms are made to feel like failures for things like this by other 'well-meaning' (?) people!
I am currently breastfeeding my second child out of three. I started nursing my first but was hospitalized for 5 days and my milk dried up. This was many years ago and no one suggested pumping, and being a new mom, I knew nothing about it.
My sister cared for her while I was in the hospital. She called our family physician (yes, in those days HE did the delivering and after care of mom and child!) and he told her to put the baby on whole milk.
YUP! The stuff that comes from a COW!! There's a whole other issue!!
I nursed my second child for 15 1/2 months.
I am currently nursing my 22 month old.
I have friends and family who breast fed --and many who used formula. And you know what? It isn't any of my business!
If asked, I would recommend breastfeeding, of course,...IF you feel so inclined. ANYONE who is totally turned off by the idea shouldn't torture themselves trying for very long --IF they try. If you don't WANT to do it the chances are good that it won't work.
I would also tell you that if it isn't right for you or just does not work after giving it a good try, change over to formula and ENJOY your child!
And PLEASE do not feel guilty. There should be no guilt trip associated with HOW you feed your child.
I am very fortunate that it has worked well for me.
And I truly enjoy doing it.
If I didn't, I wouldn't!
Oh, and by the way, I have THREE very healthy children!
