For years, the Simpsons has been the only show I went out of my way to watch....It appeals to me on so many levels I have trouble disecting my motivations for watching the Simpsons. After 10 seasons, I still find it the most creative show on television (rivaled only by Futurama, another Groening creation).
First, I love quotes. The stranger, the odder, the better. The Simpsons is, by far, my favorite source of quotes. The characters amuse me horribly and they tend to spout off the funniest remarks and quips I've ever heard.
The show has many in-jokes which long-time watchers (like myself). I wonder if anyone has come up with a Simpsons drinking game. Take a chug when: "someone says 'Yoink' as they take something", "Nelson hits someone", "Homer says 'D'oh'", "the comic book guy makes an internet or computer reference", "Apu says 'Please come again'", "Selma or Patty smoke", "Grampa Simspon tells a 'remember when' story", "Barny belches", "Bart makes a prank call to Moe", "Maggie sucks her pacifier", "Maggie falls down", "Marge gets frustrated and growls" "Skinner's mother yells at him" or "Lisa sighs". The possibilities are endless.
I also love obscure bits of knowledge. The Simpsons appeals to this aspect of my personality by constantly having references to obscure movies, books and people. These intrigue me and I have gone so far as to actually look up the references when I didn't "get" them.
I am surprised when people refer to it as a children's show. Yes, it is a cartoon...but isn't really aimed at children. I know many children who love the Simpsons, but I find most of the humor too mature for children to truly appreciate. The "Itchy and Scratchy" cartoon-within-a-cartoon violence is truly over the top but may be a little much for small children (I, however, find it hilarious).
I get irritated when people refer to the Simpsons family as dysfunctional. I disagree - I find them to be a quirky but loving family: Marge is a good mother, Homer is dumb but tries his best, Lisa is reserved but caring and Bart really isn't the brat he is made out to be. Every family has its ups and downs and dismissing this as being dysfunctional is woefully naive.
In general, I find this an engaging and fun show that is always worth watching. Why did I write this opinion: to quote Ralph Wiggum, "This is my sandbox. I can't go into the deep end. That's where I saw the leprechaun. He told me to burn things!!" (Yes, it doesn't make sense, that's the whole point.)
