It's gotten to where everytime you leave your house nowadays, you're bound to have a sighting. Not an Elvis or a UFO sighting, I'm talking about a group of 12 year old girls, dressed to expose their midriffs to the world and clothes that blatantly expose their shape.
I'll be the first to admit, I'm just as much of a girl watcher as the next guy. Gary Puckett found out the hard way, that "beneath your perfume and make up, you're still a baby." Are they doing this to please themselves, or to please someone else? This is where the line between following a fashion trend and becoming a slave to it exists.
They see a celebrity on TV like Brittney Spears or someone, and who knows how a child is going to react to this kind of exploitation? Their first thought is "Oh, she's famous because she can turn guys on." A lot of adults think the same thing, apparently, so maybe they're right, maybe not. But the point is that you can't control people's brains out there, and if they're made to think that this kind of existence is a path to financial freedom, then they're doomed from the get-go, unless they get extremely "lucky".
It wasn't too long ago, the last time I saw it on television, this time it was Christina Aguilera, who is starting to look like one of the more notorious "belly marketers" out there. And there goes the camera, zooming in on it. WOW, amazing that even a fraction of a person's fame or respect has to come from that. It's a great thing to teach children that we really are all different and we each have something special about us, but when it comes to midriffs, the bottom line is, they all look the same. So if even one person goes out and buys the CD on the basis of what they saw there, that's $15 that could have gone to feed the kids who are forced to starve, rather than going to the ones who choose to.
Looking over almost any teen-geared magazine, sometimes it is appalling to see some of the outfits that get marketed and advertised (through music and movies as well) to our world's future. Next thing you know, they'll be in high heels at the local hangout because they saw it in an article "How to Look Sexy". I understand that we all need our business, but in this law of supply and demand, I can't help but wonder who's really demanding?
