As a kid during the 60's growing up in a college town I remember the freshman beenies. Year after year we would go to the football games and collect them when they were thrown away. I knew then that the beenies were worth no money but we collected them anyway. I had quite the vertical collection of Uconn beenies and you know how much my valued collection got me. Nothing, I never had a buyer.
Now we reach the 90's and what goes around almost came around. What possesses people to spend hundreds or even thousands of their hard-earned dollars for a stuffed toy meant to be sold for less than ten dollars. What are you going to do with your valued collection when the market goes south? Your collection is worth absolutely nothing without a buyer.
Now that I have said that I will admit my daughter has 40-50 beanies that she has received as gifts over the last few years. Some are worth money according to the magazines. You know what she has taken the tags off of them and actually plays with them. They do not live their life in plastic bags waiting to be sold to the highest bidder. She has some bears that are desirable that sit on shelves and gather dust. Yes they are getting worn! We have the same Princess beanie that people were spending over $100.00 for, we got it for $7.00 on Ebay (See my review of Ebay).
We have never spent more than $7.00 on a beanie. In our house these toys are exactly that, TOYS. Sure my daughter has her favorites but they all live in the same box under her desk.
Beanies are cute but this business of them being worth hundreds or thousands is a dream. They are only worth that if you can find a sucker that is willing to spend more than you did when you were suckered. Enjoy your beanies while I reminisce about my days of chasing college freshmen for their hats.
