No Surefire Methods

Oct 12 '00

There is no surefire method to keep the morning sickness away. The best way to combat it when and if it does happen is to have plenty of saltine crackers on hand. The saltines with unsalted tops are better because this way you are not putting any additional salt into your body therefore you won't retain the salt (which causes bloating).

I guess morning sickness is a part of pregnancy, but some people are lucky in that they do not get it. For the ones that do, if you are prone to having heartburn before you are pregnant, then there is a good chance you can get morning sickness if your cravings are things that are overly spicy or tangy. You cannot help what your cravings are, but keeping the saltines around will help to stop that feeling and to settle your stomach.

There is an old wives tale that says if you have a lot of heartburn, then your child will be born with a lot of hair. But, for one of my children, it was the first time I had heartburn ever in my life, and the child was relatively bald - only had a blonde dusting of fuzzy hair. So, you cannot go by that.

Not everyone gets morning sickness, so don't assume just because you are pregnant that you will get it. But, for those days when you do feel nausea, the crackers help and so does laying down totally flat without moving for a time.
