Maybe that title does not make much sense until you have heard the reason why my brother and I recently spent one night at a new Comfort Suites in Abilene, Texas. The date was December 26, 2000, and those of you who live in or around Texas know that the western half of the state was a big block of ice. Yet for whatever reason, my brother and I chose to head west from Ft. Worth, hoping to make it home to by the end of the day. In five hours of driving, we got as far as Abilene and made the choice to stop for the night.
I originally pulled in to a Comfort Inn off of the interstate, only to find that they were completely full, as were all of the other motels along that part of the road. So the very friendly man behind the desk called their sister motel, the Comfort Suites across town, and held a room for us. Every motel we passed along the way looked to be full as well, so we stuck with the Comfort Suites.
Upon arrival I was happy to see a Whataburger right next door, which meant we would not have to drive for food that night. The man behind the check-in counter was very nice and friendly. We went with a one bed suite containing a king size bed. (Man I wish I had one at home.) The room cost me $74, which I assumed was the regular rate for the room. I really did not want to spend that much for a one night emergency stay, but seeing how all the other cheaper motels were already full I did not have a choice. It was only after we had been in our room for a while and were about to go downstairs to the vending machine that I noticed the sign on the door stating the regular rate for our particular room with two occupants was $119. So I felt much better about paying the $74. I thought it was great of them to offer a discount due to the emergency nature of the situation.
Our room was extremely nice, but not worth the regular price of $119. We had a large desk, a small refrigerator and microwave, coffee maker, a small couch which folded out into a bed, a nice sized TV with plenty of channels to choose from, and then the very large and quite comfortable bed. I could not have seen myself paying over $100 for the room though. Our window overlooked a frozen river of sewage and drainage.
We did not make use of the indoor pool or guest weight room, nor did we use the laundry room located on our floor. We did visit the vending machines once, but I was more than surprised to find a coke cost $1.25. The candy and chips were $.60 to $.75 each.
My only complaint for the evening turned out to be the people staying next door. They had 3 children with them, I'm guessing between the ages of 5 and 9. Not only did they wake me up at 1 AM talking, but then again at 4 AM when apparently they decided to get up and leave because they were running around the hallway fully clothed and yelling, including the parents. Had I not been so tired I would have bothered to call the front desk and complain.
Overall I'd say our unplanned night in the Comfort Suites was not bad. I would recommend Comfort Suites if you are planning on traveling or going on vacation, but only if you don't mind spending a little bit more for basically really pretty wallpaper and an archway in the ceiling. Otherwise, save money and go somewhere else.
