MDG XBOX AD MISLEADING/FALSE
I noticed the ad on Friday of an XBOX 360 "WITH ALL DESKTOP & NOTEBOOK +MODELS."
Well, I went to store the store with ad in hand with the idea of ordering a HORIZON LC with an XBOX at my local MDG outlet.
The store was vacant but for two employees. One fellow was sitting at a desk on the phone and a woman was standing behind the counter. She eyed me as I walked in but didn't say anything. I walked around the store. I went over to check out the laptops but they were all turned off. A huge LCD TV was turned on on the wall. There was a display of desktops PCs but they didn't look like they were functional. Overall, the store did not have a polish feel to it. It was just a storefront with ample space but nothing to give you the idea that you were dealing with a reputable business.
Well, after doing my little walk inside and not finding anything interesting or any XBOXes on display I get the attention of the lady who I knew had spotted me on entering the premises. I ordered the Horizon LC pc and added that I wanted the free XBOX as well. She immediately said to me that the pc I was ordering did not qualify for the promotion of a free XBOX. I then asked if the deal could be obtained by purchasing the Horizonbook LC laptop. She again said no. I then asked if I could obtain the deal by purchasing anything on the AD that I brought along with me that featured the XBOX promotion. She again said no.
So I asked her,"What do I need to buy to get the deal?"
She said I had to buy a PLUS model. I said that there was nothing in the ad that would lead someone to know what that was and that the ad gave the idea that all one had to buy was any MDG PC/Notebook to qualify. In effect, that the ad was written with intent to mislead. Here is were she qualified the promotion. She said one had to buy a 2007 PC/Notebook that would be an additional $ 300 AND also that one HAD TO BUY an extended warranty for $ 250 to be able to get the free XBOX 360!!!
I protested that the ad was misleading but she looked uninterested. I finally asked which XBOX do you get. Whereupon the fellow who had been on the phone all this time piped up that it was the core model.
I walked out. |

I looked on MDG's website, the Horizon LC is $599. Do you honestly think you are going to get a computer and an Xbox for $599??? And a premium Xbox at that!!! Not to be rude, but are u focking retarded? Maybe MDG will throw in some payments for your car too.
I bought an Apton system late last year from MDG, it was my 3rd system from them. One of the best systems I've ever owned. Its funny to read these posts about people complaining about sales people trying to sell them something....go fockin figure.
Its also funny to hear people expect the world of a computer for $700. If those cheapies did everything and were fantastic, why would they even both advertising other systems??? Its just like anything else in life, you get what you pay for. |

Re MDG complaints - TV's too?
Geez, I must've lucked out with my MDG purchased from the Scarborough store back around Christmas 2003, based on all the problems reported on this forum. I have heard some grumblings before on other unrelated websites and I always came to MDG's defence as I have yet to experience a problem hardware or software related and had a positive buying experience. (OK, I did re-install windows once due to a virus picked up on some website that I should've know better...with this fix, the telephone tech support from MDG was great). Yes I WILL buy another computer when its time from them. There I said it! My wife on the other hand, bought from PC Village a year and half later, with a slower processor, less memory and less hard drive space but she paid half the price so.... Apart from replacing the keyboard, its been fine too. One last thing about my MDG, my puter is on probably 16 hours a day, 5 or even more days a week. I think that is pretty good. And I work for Big Blue and get a decent discount on IBM (which became Lenovo) pc's too.
Anyway - just looking from opinions on the MDG LCD TVS's. They seem to be priced right assuming "extras" aren't required. Anyone ever compared them side by side to other brands? Like how can you compare them without looking at other brands in the same room , same show etc. Also curious about how long they last. I believe MDG has been selling them for just over 2 years? |

RE: Reply
You don't get the point.
The very fact the an Xbox system is offered free is the scam.
I to called the store in advance about the Xbox and was tolled that the offer was only for the systems marked with a "+" sign. Of course there are no sytems in the add with this offer. When I asked for more info the salesperson said just come down to store because they could not give anymore info by phone. Also when asked about the No PST GST they said it was only for 2007 models, again nothing in the add.
So why place a six page add with models that DO NOT qualify for the specials.
I think people should call all these newspapers they advertise in and complain about the false adds that they are running. I noticed some local papers in Montreal have not carried any adds from MDG for many months. Maybe due to all the complaints the got. |

Check your hardware
I purchased an MDG computer for my mom. First of all, I was against buying from them, but mom wanted to. She won out. We purchased it from the London, Ont. Store. The first issue was that it wasn't ready when I went back the following evening. They said that it would be about 1/2 hr, so I went and had dinner. I came back and it was ready. I took it home, it powered up ok. I started checking the system since the startup screen was coming up as an Intel Celeron. We had purchased a 3000 system that was supposed to have an Intel Pentium D processor. Sure enough, it was the wrong CPU. I contiunued to check and found that the Harddrive was an IDE drive and not a SATA drive like we were told.
I took the tower back and pointed out that the CPU was wrong. I got the ole "new guys in the back" story. Fair enough, they said that they would fix it. I then told them about the Harddrive. They said that they could fix it, but they were out of the SATA 160 Gig 5400 RPM drives that were to be included as advertised. They offered to put in a 160 7500 RPM drive instead for $50. After much complaining, they said that they would put in the 7500 RPM drive at no charge. So I again waited for 1/2 hr and took the system home. I checked and they had the correct CPU, but the same WRONG harddrive. SO, back again to correct the Harddrive. Got the system home and finally seems ok. I still have to go back for the printer that they were out of when we bought the system. My total number of trips will be five. I live in the opposite end of town as well. We had purchased the computer on Tuesday night and right now it is Saturday. My opinion is that their customer service is very bad. This could be due to having very young and inexperienced people working there. Some advice. Do not buy anything from MDG! Time will tell if we have further issues with this machine. I hope that it will be a long time at least.

RE: Reply
Really? I was just in there this week for renewal on my antivirus, and while I was there i saw 2 customers leaving with XBox's. How come they got XBox's if the Xbox thing is a scam?
I also had a look at the flyer tonight after reading your post, it does say "On new technology (2007)" for No GST/PST. It is also listed on the systems, 2007 model- $1199.
Maybe you should take a closer look at things boy who cried wolf. |

** Must Read **
1) Don't BUY from MDG!
2) If you do not heed this worning and decide to buy from them, I would suggest you have them put everything in writing before you purchase it. Ask them to break down everything inside your PC, including make/model, full description.
3) Use a credit card to make your purchase. If something is incorrect and they refuse to return it, contact your credit card company and they will be able to assist with a chargeback to the merchant. The no refund / no return will not apply for incorrect sold item.
4) Don't BUY from MDG!
I would rather you buy from Futureshop, Bestbuy, Costco, Dell, then buy from MDG. You will get scammed in someway by MDG. Any computer company that describes a dual core processor as "2 X 2.8= 5.6GHZ" (on MDG site)has no idea how computers work and should not be selling them. Hop on to the INTEL website and see how they describe the processors they sell. |

How can you like MDG
After ready so many posts about how so many of you are so proud of your MDG computer, I had to go over some of their new systems to check if they had gotten any better since i bought mine. In short, not at all. Back when I bought a MDG i new little about computers, and to be honest i figured they were all the same. I looked at their part descriptions which i now recognize to be vague and thought yay my computer rocks.. in reality it sucks. For a start their motherboards are terrible. In fact all their parts are low end cheep parts which have already been out dated. Now that I am some what of a computer 'savvy' person. I have decided that the best way to get value for money is to build it myself. For a start the build cost is ruffly half of what a preassembled computer would cost. Now I've completed my part list and filled my carts with everything i need and you know what, I'm confident that up to 3 years my computer will still be a competitor and honestly I have built it to ensure that upgrading is not only possible but will require minimum part replacements. I can just add as I go...
also I would like to note that the assholes at MDG riveted my case shut... was a real hassle drilling them out to check the parts. Also had to go buy case screws which was another hassle. so if you don't want to build one then I'd sujest dell, or even buy a asus, acer or someonther computer, just don't buy MDG they suck!!! |

red flag deals
lmao checked out that forum and those people don't know sh*t about computers...pfff
for those who do check it out, your sure to get a good laugh
a e6700 processor at 2.66 ghz costs 999.99 (and that might be american) so to think on a 1200 some odd dollar computer your gonna get a faster processor then that, you must be on crack.
O... and sorry for the double post, just thought it was hilarious |

my email to them
To Whom I May Concern,
Hello, We have Complains about Your Quality and Service.
Three days ago on Wednesday, February 14 we have decided to buy a new computer as our older one was giving us some problems. Browsing through the ads we found out that MDG, a Canada-based company offers the best deals with bunch of free upgrades like double hard drive, memory, etc. So we went Your at 861 Browns Line, Etobicoke, ON, M8B 3V7.
Soon after entering we have discovered the bait and switch fraud system running here. Nevertheless we were satisfied with the brand name components and wanted to support local industry. We have never received any advertised/unadvertised freebies, but overall we were satisfied, buying Altec Lansing speakers for $50.00 and even contemplating to but a laptop for my son's college, as he will be going to America and should have something Canadian away from home.
Coming home and unpacking the product from a plain, unprofessional box, titled "Turbo Case" we have discovered that the front panel portion with two USB ports and microphone/sound ports were upside down. After unsuccessfully trying to perform online conferencing we have discovered that the front microphone port is malfunctioning or not working at all and brought it to the store. Also some other software supplied on a CD-ROM was impossible to install.
Person in costumer support was a younger man with dark hair and dark tight sweater with unclear lisp. He started to yell and give us unfriendly gestures that the movie player software we have installed was incompatible with my hardware and other humorous reasons that did not make sense. Clearly person did not know what he was talking about and was trying to look educated. When we waited for him to fix he started swinging his arms at us and telling to go away as he is not comfortable with costumers around.
Lady that worked there promised that it will be fixed by the end of the day so we were standing outside in the cold for something like two hours. Just before closing time we went to check and he said that he put another hard drive and the microphone worked. He yelled that it was us who corrupted windows files and made it not work. Fix was promised to be completed in the morning and given a call.
Call from there was never made. We were waiting until four o'clock, canceling all of our weekend plans. After few calls there he said it was all fixed and ready to go. We came and the same guy gives us the computer back with numerous scratches on body and said that nothing is too be done and computers all over the country are not compatible with the front port and he did not fix anything..... When we asked for his name, he refused and gave the name of someone named Mel, misspelling words.
We brought it back home and decided to return it. We are completely unsatisfied with the inferior quality and support at that location. We would like to demand our money back. Doing some Google search we discovered that we are not the only ones that got bad impression. After calling the number on the back of the computer tech support representative said that all system's front microphone jack is supposed to be working and person at the store . Friendly person there apologized and said to contact feedback@mdg.ca.

The owner, the name, the modus operandi
You can learn a lot about MDG from reading their press releases. This one covers the owner, the reason for the name MDG and how it is a franchise.
Apparently it was originally printed in the Globe and Mail:

... and what's with the shady OS?
Hi,
First time poster, but I felt the need to toss my 2cents on MDG. First, I have to say that when we got the system home I was disappointed to discover a Celeron processor, although to be fair, I had only been assured the processor was a Pentium, (and I didn't think to question further).
Then, within two days, there was I performing a complete re-install of the operating system. That sincerely sucked! Nevertheless, a year has passed and new issues have arisen.
I like to do a complete system re-install every year, but I could not find my XP disk from MDG (nor could I recall ever having received one). So, after checking tech boards and sites, I was led to the conclusion that I could a) install from a borrowed disk, b) change the registration key to my own 'legal' one on the sticker on my MDG tower, (using instructions provided by Microsoft!), and then c)go on to activate my newly re-installed software. I acknowledge that I may have been misled or deluded BUT...
When the process to change the reg key from the borrowed one to the MDG one failed, I contacted Microsoft support to get them to walk me through the process. They were not thrilled with my choice of procedures, but they would support me if MDG participated in a 3-way conference call (to verify I'd legally purchased the software).
Not only did MDG refused to comply, but Microsoft support could not suggest a reason why my changing the reg key failed if I had a valid, legal reg key. Furthermore, MDG insists that I bring my entire machine back to the store (rather than just the original receipt, sticker, and / or hard drive), and they'll re-install. They would not even consider issuing an new key to me.
Honestly, I don't want to take my machine back to them. I'm scared I won't come home with what I brought in! And if any MDG staffers are reading this, I'd welcome being enlightened , since right now I'm coming to the conclusion that MDG uses shady licensing or installation practices. |

Better Deal?
Can anyone or blah2000 tell me if I do buy from MDG , how can I get a good deal, and make sure what they say is what I get. Do they print out their quotes? Also, I want to know if they will replace the Graphics Media Accelerator with a discrete graphics card? And what would be price approximately? Most of these questions are directed toward blah2000, but anyone can answer. |
