Read only time on Monday (the 29th) for three hours.

Why?

I suspect the "October 29th read-only" is epinions way of commemorating my long-sought-after epinions silence. C'mon Roheblius, fess up. I'll still love you if you're the bearer of insulting confirmations.

we're back

Apologies for the extended downtime. We encountered some issues in the course of our release and have been working through the night to resolve them. The good news is we're back now with a number of updated categories and updated site search. Take it for a spin.

A lot changed on the site. See something wrong? Use our bug reporting forms to let us know.

Thanks for your patience!

Andy

Report, report, report

With the new SP technology brings us pretty much a brand new way of doing the product catalog.

Much like what happened with Pets, there are going to be road bumps. Rather than complain about them, we can handle this in a productive way. Report the issues that you have. The more issues that we can report to the engineering crew, the easier it will be to find the bugs and fix them.

We're going to be working hard to fix all the issues. Engineers pretty much worked through the night last night and I'm not sure Greg James has even slept yet.

Report the bugs and please be patient. This site has been here a long time and whenever you do a big change, with the amount of products and reviews we have, there are going to be issues.

Thanks a bunch.

GG

Reporting Bugs

First it was the Pet reviews that got de-categorized and some of the Pet reviews showing on my profile page but the review had vanished. Also I have written on products that showed up without any reviews but my original review wasn't around to move it there. The Pet issue has been this way since about June. With this new SP even my latest review in Pets is left without a category.

With this new SP in comes alot of H&G reviews with the same problems - missing categories, and the inability to find the reviews going through the route a consumer would do.

So my question is, is Epinions wanting every single review reported that has a problem or just some examples?

What kind of changes were made? Anything we might notice up front, or was it mostly back end stuff?

I work in technology as well, so I know all about those all-nighters!

Thanks for bringing us back up.

You can report just a few examples. 10 would be great. And try to report a variety of categories. We do know about this bug already, and it's just a display bug. Your profile page can't display the category information at the moment. But that doesn't actually mean your review is severed and lost. It just means your profile page is a little dumber than it was. For now :)

A ton of back end stuff. And some front end. Try site search.

In a nutshell, Shopping.com is the sole product catalog provider we have, and we have finally plugged some categories into them that were never integrated before. Their catalog is not a perfect fit for us, but it does provide a lot more products, and it will stimulate category earnings. Integrating with Shopping.com's catalog also allows us to use their search engine. It, too, has its issues, but it's a big step up from our previous one.

In both cases, the catalog and the search engine, we've replaced an older architecture which no one was maintaining with a new one that is maintained by Shopping.com. As a subsidiary of Shopping.com, this was truly the only way to take Epinions forward.

changes

All sorts of things look different! I think once I get used to it I'll like it.

That said, if we keep having read-only times I'm going to have to go into therapy for epi-deprivation
