Anyone with hiking and/or camping questions - I can do my best to answer you or point you in the right direction for more information.
Any big hiking plans for the spring?

RE: Hiking & Camping Questions...
Do you have any recomendations for hiking shoes? I didn't see any listed on your index of reviews. I will need a new pair this spring, but don't want to spend a fortune. Thanks, Dave |

Hiking Boots
Quote: trailhound Do you have any recomendations for hiking shoes?
I actually ran across a pair of these in LL Bean's Outlet Center in Freeport. They've turned out to be one of the most comfortable pair of boots I've had.
Gore-Tex Day Hikers
I've also always had good experiences with the Vasque line of boots, especially the leather boots that they have. My favorite in the Sundowner which they have bulked up a it since I've last had them, but I'd imagine they are still good boots.
Vasque Sundowners
Basically I'd suggest a semi-stiff leather/gore-tex combination boot for basic hiking. It might be slightly overkill but they last longer than the fabric boots, usually are more waterproof and generally are a more comfortable fit. Plus they give you the option of occasionally going on more rugged hikes without having to get a 2nd pair of boots.
I do have a hiking boot shopping guide up here on Epinions, but since I can't post the link I'll just say that if you search for "Epinions hiking boot shopping 101" on google my guide will come up. That offers some advice for actually choosing the boot.
Hope that helps,
Jeff |

RE: Hiking Boots
I realized that I linked to the all-leather Gore-Tex Hikers at LL Bean. Here are the Leather & Fabric Gore-Tex Day Hikers that I have and really love (though I'm sure the all leather ones would be great too, just a little heavier).

RE: Hiking & Camping Questions...
My husband is taking my son to a boyscout weekend camp in November. My husband needs to get a tent and an adult sleeping bag. We are in southern California, so it doesn't rain a lot here, but we still need to take into consideration the possibility of rain. I have heard that one can waterproof the tent before use, but I am not sure how to do that either.
Any recommendation for a good tent (easy to put together and durable) and a warm sleeping bag will be most appreciated. The tent can be for 2 people or for a family of 4.
Thanks in advance. |

Kelty makes a decent line of tents that aren't as expensive as others, but usually stand up to quite a bit of use.
