Watching The Cell made me feel very much like I was stuck in a cell. Even thirty minutes into the movie I was still looking around, confused; usually twenty minutes into a movie I am thoroughly mezmerized. It's not that The Cell was a bad movie... I just didn't think that its creators did a very good job of getting the viewer to understand exactly what was going on, leading to confusion.
The Movie
The movie as a whole was certaintly riveting. Special effects and freaky music both contributed to that "Matrix-feeling" of not knowing whether you are awake or dreaming. At a few places in the movie I actually had to force myself to look away from the screen and focus on something else in the theate. It's not real I found myself repeating, yet for some reason, even with all the special effects I simply did not like the movie as I left.
Maybe it was because I was confused at the beginning, maybe it was the sheer horror of some of the scenes, or maybe it was the seemingly senselessness at which characters in the movie acted, or maybe it was the annoying music, but ironically, all of these factors helped make the movie what it is.
The Metaphors
If you watch the movie you are certain to notice a few certain metaphors. If you have not yet seen it, watch for the presence of birds in the movie, and also listen for changes in the instrumental track. There are many metaphors and objects that the creators use to make the movie more than meets the eye, but overall I didn't find them to be enough to make me thoroughly enjoy the experience.
