The Suspense is Killing me

May 29 '00

Movies that leave you on the edge of your seat, movies that surprise, keep you jumping and guessing. Suspense is an escapism that draws us completely into the movie, only to return us with the closing credits.
If a suspense film takes you completely by surprise, you know your money was well spent.

I will not keep you in suspense one moment longer

10. Marnie Before The Sixth Sense Alfred Hitchcock gave us Marnie, the surprise ending story of a very frightened, confused woman with a repressed memory that gets to smooch Cary Grant.

9. The Usual Suspects Who is Keyser Soze? This story of greed and violence is layered with suspense and surprise.

8. Malice Bill Pulman, Nicole Kidman and Alec Baldwin make this movie better than it was meant to be. This is a great movie for a lazy, snowy Sunday afternoon.

7. North by Northwest Edge of the seat suspense in another great Hitchcock thriller. The Mount Rushmore scene is a cinema classic.

6. Marathon Man Is it safe? Dustin Hoffman is a kid unlucky enough to have a brother who seems to be gainfully employed, but as what? I've included Olivier twice in this list, the man was a genius, but I can't recommend his dentistry.

5. Body Heat It's amazing what lust can drive a man to. William Hurt and Kathleen Turner burn up the screen in this hot thriller.

4. The Sixth Sense "I see dead people", spooky little Haley Joel Osmont offers an amazing performance as a haunted little boy. With Bruce Willis as his mentor, this movie reels you in and keeps you hooked long after the credits roll.

3. Charade What's going on is not what you think is going on. Follow that? Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant unravel the mystery and give the viewer a grand time while doing it.

2. Psycho Anthony Perkins as creepy Norman Bates will curl your toes no matter how many times you watch. Classic suspense from the master himself. Alfred Hitchcock knew how to bring us in, and he never let us go.

1. Sleuth Michael Caine and Laurence Olivier. A movie that keeps you guessing and guessing and guessing. The acting is superb, and the script is rich.
