Ever since I could read, I have read the TOI. As a kid it were the sports pages that I would head to first, for I could just not make anything of the goings on reported on the front pages. It was a mad rush in the morning as me and my cousins would all try to be the first to get at the paper. KN Prabhu's vivid cricketing accounts, I can still remember from those days.
Over the years I began to appreciate the other things, but seldom any of its political coverage ever attract me. The 'City Pages' especially was a favourite. I suspect it is called differently now, but it would tell me of the various things that happened in Mumbai. I believe now each city edition has a similar thing. So when I shifted to Bangalore in quest of that daily bread, the first change I brought about in my roomie's life was to introduce the TOI. I think he still thanks me for that gesture from somewhere in Paris.
So really those are the only 2 cities that I have followed the TOI out of. Sometimes the Delhi edition on the plan, but that would always have more political news and hence pretty stiff. And now the online edition. Unbelievably this July on my annual vacation in India for my brother's wedding, when Mumbai got washed out and the train services were disrupted, the only place I got to read of the press conference that Central Railways of India had called cancelling trains leading out of Mumbai was the online edition.....at about 5:00am in the morning!!! There was no way I would have gotten the print edition that day knowing the chaotic state the city was in. Thank God for the online edition I could inform relatives who needed to get out of town but were stranded that they needn't try reaching the stations for they were not going anywhere that day!
Over the years the magazine sections have really taken on a cool face and look. What began only as The Sunday Review section has now expanded into a supplement encompassing a zillion things almost every single day of the week. It is sometimes too much of information overload.
All in all when in Mumbai or Bangalore, I still want to settle down in that chair, with the day's first cuppatea and my own copy of the TOI and smile at RK Laxman's cartoon of the day. Now that is something I miss doing here.
