First of all, I would like to say that just about any newspaper you choose is biased because the owners of the big media companies are politically active. Just because I don't like many of the editorials doesn't mean that I don't like the news content.
I have been reading the Mercury news since... hmm... I can't remember, but it has been a long time. I used to subscribe to the PM edition for closing stock quotes (back when people checked stock prices only once a day), but the PM edition was discontinued a few years back. It doesn't matter because I don't look for stock quotes in the paper anymore. There was a time that I switched to the Chronicle because they had a free promotional offer and I wanted to try it out, but I switched back to the Merc immediately afterwards because:
- The Mercury News offers very good in-depth coverage on local issues that concern citizens.
- The movies section on Fridays has reviews from columnists that have different tastes.
- The Business section contains many computer and computer part ads.
- In the Living section, there are columnists of
- The Mercury News covers news interesting to specific cultural groups. There is a lot of news about cultural events that I enjoy attending.
- The Merc does a good job of keeping editorial views from biasing the news.
Some areas need improvement though.
- The Computing/Personal Tech section needs someone with a more interesting and engaging writing style. Summaries of all reviews in the section would be nice.
- The Business section carries way too many articles about the tech sector. Tech news seems to cover about 80% of the front page of the section.
- I don't agree with many of the editorials.
I realize that a lot of people read news on the Internet, but there really is no replacement (yet) for local news covered in the newspaper. However, the Internet is a good place for detailed coverage of national news. Stuff that won't fit into the newspaper. No matter which newspapers cover your area, I highly recommend subscribing to one or two of them.
