Don't go overboard

Less is really better when you go camping. Lots of people tend to go overboard with getting very expensive specialized gear. Of course if you're backpacking the decision making process is a bit different, but just for your run of the mill camping there's not a whole lot you need and most can be bought very reasonably second hand. I would recommend a good lantern and I prefer propane myself. Make sure you have a couple of extra mantles also. A good tent is nice to have, but you don't need one the size of your house. The most important thing to do is to make sure you waterproof all of the seams. Flashlights are important as well as a good knife, a tarp and some rope. We enjoy cooking over the fire and a good skillet and teapot to boil water are all that's really needed. For places that don't allow fires, we've always used a Coleman stove. Bring a bowl to wash dishes in and several washcloths and several towels. Depending on the season will dictate the type of sleeping bag and clothes stuffed in the stuff sack serve as a pillow. Camping is about getting away and simplifying, so to bring half of your house with you kind of defeats the purpose. Plus things get so dirty, especailly if it rains, that less really is better.
