Ready for camping?

Apr 18 '00

Memorial Day is just around the corner, officially kicking off the camping season. Do you have all the gear you need? Here are some ideas for getting your equipment less expensively.

Shop in January and February. This is the best time to find closeout sales. You can save up to 50% by buying your equipment this time of year.

Garage and tag sales are a great resource. I have found tents, sleeping bags, coolers at garage sales. One of my favorite deals was a dining canopy still that was still in the packaging. People often just want to clear out their garages and you can take advantage.

Don't buy beyond your needs. If you are a weekend camper you don't need a tent that can be used at Everest. If you are only camping in the summer you don't need equipment made for subzero temperatures which generally is more expensive.

Look into the Boy Scouts. Often you can get good deals when a troop disbands or gets new equipment. This is good for the person who only camps occasionally. The troops often have lanterns, tents, stoves, and cooking equipment. Sometimes you can find just one or two person in the troop who is no longer interested in camping.

Mail order is another way that you can find camping equipment. This is especially good for the hard to find items. If you are a person who has no interest or time for shopping in the store this may be the option for you.

Look at the floor models. You are likely to get a discount if it looks scratched or worn. Anyone who has done camping knows that often your equipment looks like that after a trip or two anyway.

Colemon and Timberline are two of the manufacturers that I know have outlets. You can save at least 30% compared to specialty shops or discount chains on most equipment. Often seconds can be found here. A few of these have extra sales which are not to be missed.

If you are interested in a product but not sure if you want to buy it borrow it from a friend to try it out to see if it is worth buying.

Happy camping.
