Nintendo64PSX's Full Review: Rumble Racing for PlayStation 2
EA's Nascar Series decided to have a little change. Instead of the oh so often real Nascar license, they decided to make it a little more...deadly. Sure, Nascar 2002 is out and more Nascars are out to come, but this change wasnt such a bad one.
I never played any Nascar game, and only have Rumble Racing. It's a racing game, like any other. There are cups you race in. Object of the game is to beat your opponents in a considerably long tracks. You keep winning cups until you beat the game. I haven't played for such a long time, but I think there 3 cups with 3 types of championships in each(I'm sorry if I'm wrong). There are 15 tracks, and some of the levels are really good, while others are really hill-billyish. I really liked some levels, the ones that take place in night with all the lights and glamour. However, some tracks take place in middle of no where filled with grass. Half of these grass tracks are okay, but the other half is really boring to play. The tracks, in general, are good.
There are aloottt of racers. In total, 8 of you are racing. The better you do in a race, the more points you get. At the end of the three races in the particular championship, whoever gets the most points wins. Many of the racers are useless because, well they suck compared to other racers with better averages.
You also use weapons to help yourself win. Like Mario Kart, if you are in 1st, you generally get worse weapons then if you are, say, last. Tricks include your usual - nitros, bombs, shields, etc. There is also the "Twister" which usually comes only if you are near last or last. When used, a twister comes and tries to sweep all your opponents. Sometimes after using this weapon, you may find yourself in first place.
Besides weapons to help you win, you must also land tricks. Landing a trick will get you a boost. The bigger the trick, the better the boost, so tricks do play a very vital roll. Tricks include rolling sideways or up and down, or in a combination.
It was hard for me to choose whether to give this game a three or four. However, I decided to give it 4 stars. There are many tracks, and 3 out of 5 would mean a 60%, which it definately does not deserve. Still, there are many many other better games out for PS2 right now and Rumble Racing may not be your first pick. If you are a racing fan in general, you may want to pick this one up, perhaps later since GT3 just came out. If you are not a racing fan, you may not like this cause in many aspects it's just your average racer. If you like a little racing, rent this.
The graphics in this game are all right as well. No pop-in, no fogginess, just crisp, smooth, and colorful. The background is filled with liviliness, filled with lights. In one level, you are in "Cargo" and there are boxes everywhere and near the end you end up on the streets with street lamps (3 laps per race by the way). Each little detail was given and it was great. Another takes place in an airport, and one shortcut was going through an airplane. Neat.
The announcer is a total hill-billy. I hate his voice and he says retarded comments at certain points. Even if you are winning, he sometimes still annoys you. This only hurts the game itself, and EA should of prevented this. However, you can turn him off, if you want.
Loading is fast, which is a definate plus! It takes only a few seconds to get to the main screen. Then a few seconds to load a track up. Awesome.
There really isnt that much replay value. After a week or two, you find yourself not playing Rumble Racing anymore. As much tracks there are, once you beat the game, the only thing you can do is a) find the Easter eggs or b) replay the tracks.
