When I first became interested in motorcycles, I was lucky enough to stumble upon the 1985 Magna V30 as a trainer bike.
From then on, I refuse to settle for anything less than a V4. And despite Yamaha's speed title held by it's long-in-tooth, V4 powered VMAX -the Magna remains a much better motorcycle in comparison.
It truly has it all. The Magna's versatility is top-notch. It will tour, drag, cruise, and look good all with the same bike. The performance doesn't hardly change at all if you decide to carry a passenger; it only equates to slightly higher revving. When two-up riding, the Magna also maintains it's nimbleness through the curves.
I'm also a big guy [6'4"/245lbs] and the riding position suits me just fine. I would like a set of forwards, but only as a perk, not a necessity.
As far a s maintenance and reliability go: there are few cruisers [metric and non-metric] that can match the Magna's quality and ease of maintenance.
I live in NW South Carolina, aka- "Twistie Heaven", and the Magna is right at home riding in the mountains. The grunt from the V4 while exiting a turn will make you smirk in satisfaction, and the ride the V4 offers is smooth, smooth, smooth!
The V4 Magna is deceiving for a 750cc cruiser. Many times I have heard, "750? Ha! That's a good 'training" bike, eh?"
Little do they know that this 750 is not only quicker in the quartermile than their large-displacement v-twins, but it costs thousands of dollars less at the dealership than their bikes, too. Don't let the number of cc's fool you. The Magna is more than capable of standing toe to toe with any stock V-Twin [whether it's the 1800cc VTX or the all-new, all-different VROD from HD].
In truth, the bike could be improved, but as it is -it can't be beat for the money you pay and the performance you get.
If I were assigned to upgrade the Magna for Honda, I'd replace the rear drum brake with a monster disc; up front, I'd add another disk to the single that's there; I'd do my best to increase fuel capacity while considering the air box for the V4 is already pretty sizeable, and I'd fire the person who designed the stock seat [it's only good to use while waiting for your custom seat to arrive]. Other than that, it would just be some minor ergonomic changes.
