| justarider's Full Review: 2000 Suzuki INTRUDER 800 |
The VS800 Suzuki Intruder is a great all around bike. It has plenty of power. I have ridden many types of bikes over the years and this little (if you want to call this bike little – I wouldn’t) 800 pulls harder than most 1100 cc or larger bikes.
The great benefits of this bike are:
Water-cooled
Shaft drive
5 speeds
nice exhaust sound compared to most stock bikes
loads of power
nice chrome
The drawbacks are:
Somewhat dated chopper look (not a con if you like choppers)
Foot peg placement is a little high (more like a standard placement)
Not a great bike for long commutes on the interstate.
If you don’t like the ‘softtail/chopper/custom’ look you will not like this bike. If you like a chopper look then I would strongly checkout the VS800. (If ya want more ‘rake’ you can always buy a chopper kit through some venders such as seegercycle). Most of the competitions bikes are chain drive, 4 speeds, some are air-cooled and most are slow compared to the Intruder. I can almost promise, that once you get a chance to twist the throttle on this bike you will be sold. The first time I rode a VS800 I almost came off the back of the bike while shifting from 1st to 2nd! The Shift from 4th to 5th comes in nice at around 55 MPH and you can run up to 75-80 with the motor at a steady, unstrained beat.
Would I buy this bike again? YES! I have already done this. After selling my ’87 Intruder, I bought a Harley and regretted it. Since then, the Harley is gone and I have bought another VS800 Intruder. I might buy a third one if I ever sell this one to get a 1400, but the 800 seems to do everything I want as I have no desire to have long interstate cruises on a motorcycle. If I were going to do that, I would stay away from all ‘retro’ cruisers and buy a GoldWing.
Because motorcycle styles are somewhat trendy, resale might be an issue for this bike as most bikers are wanting the ‘fatboy’ look on a motorcycle. Resale on the Intruder might be a drawback but I have not experienced this myself.
